Khaosod English #Facebook On the occasion of Makha Bucha Day on 3 March 2026, the Supreme Patriarch Somdet Phra Ariyavongsagatanana called on Buddhists to reflect on the Buddha’s teaching of the Ovada Patimokkha, delivered to 1,250 arahant monks nine months after his enlightenment. In a message marking the holy day, the Supreme Patriarch said the core principles of Buddhism, refraining from all evil, cultivating good deeds and purifying the mind, remain central to addressing suffering in today’s world. He emphasized that purifying the mind requires wisdom to recognize and overcome defilements, or kilesa, which the Buddha classified into 10 types, including greed, hatred, delusion, pride and wrong view. Understanding these mental impurities, he said, allows individuals to guard their thoughts and actions, preventing harm to others and fostering peace. The Supreme Patriarch urged Buddhists to examine their own conduct and strive to reduce defilements through mindfulness and self discipline, describing such practice as the highest form of reverence to the Buddha’s teachings.
