Lion Rock, a really big rock on the beach. really, REALLY BIG. Tiny people can be seen in the water on the left for comparison.
The photograph is split by the craggy edges of Lion Rock, dark and rugged on the right, while bright and gorgeous on the left we have clouds, sky, sea, and the far end of the beach stretching into the ocean, reflected off the turbulent waves.
The far end of the beach slightly obscuring the setting sun; light explodes from the reflection on the water.
The far end of the beach sits in the middle distance, a black silhouette against a mostly blue-grey sky. At the horizon, the sun has set but the sky is full of white hot fire that melts into a golden glow, illuminating from below a massive dark triangular cloud that gets wider the further to the right. The reflection of the stone and sky shimmers in the sea.
For Mar 19 2025... I really couldn't pick just one photo. It was honestly hard to narrow it down to four. My friends told me there was no way they could overhype Piha... they were not wrong. A downside to a morning dip whilst on dogwalk: a passing dog lifts its leg on your pile of clothes - and your wild gesticulations and shouting to the owners from the sea only results in them waving hi back 😂
