There’s nothing more Irish than a piña colada, right? Well, probably etymologically speaking anyway. Piña colada means “strained pineapple”, colada being related to colander, and piña referring to the pineapple. Piña and pine come from Latin pinus “pine” possibly from Proto-Indo-European *peie “to be fat, swell” in reference to the pine tree’s sap. This root also leads to Proto-Indo-European *pi-wer- “fertile”, which may then lead to Old Celtic *Iveriu, Old Irish Eriu, and ultimately Irish and Ireland. That Proto-Indo-European root, by the way, also leads to English fat, so don’t have too many piña coladas, as the other main ingredient in them, coconut cream, contains a lot of fat.
