Both #defence-systems and #prophages contributed to phage resistance.
For one bacterial phylogroup, strains with more defence systems were infected by fewer phages.
Prophages didn’t strictly block infection but seemed to modulate phage efficacy in complex ways.

Ecological ubiquity and phylogeny drive nestedness in phages–bacteria networks and shape the bacterial defensome Identifying the ecological and evolutionary factors that shape phage–bacterial interactions is key to understanding their dynamics in microbial communities. Yet, such interactions remain poorly charac...

New preprint out! 🧬🦠🌱

What shapes #phage–bacteria #networks in #plant environments?
- Ecological origins of bacteria and phages?
- Phage taxonomy?
- Bacterial phylogeny?
- #Prophages? #Defence-systems?

Population structure and gene flux of Listeria monocytogenes ST121 reveal prophages as a candidate driver of adaptation and persistence in food production environments Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterial pathogen found in an increasing number of food categories, potentially reflecting an expanding niche and food safety risk profile. In the UK, Listeria monocytogen...

Great work from Ana Victoria and team! I'm not surprised #prophages are involved and happy to contribute to a fabulous study.

I’m excited to share our latest preprint in collaboration with @Halllab.bsky.social

In this work, led by PhD student James Docherty, we investigated the presence of #prophages and anti-phage defence systems in human-associated #bifidobacteria:
