A sculptural vintage 1940s 50s handmade sterling silver modernist dimensional design necklace by Puig Doria of Spain. An incredibly rare and early creation by one of the most important Spanish silversmiths of the post-war period! I've had many pieces by Puig Doria over the years, but this is the first and only example of this necklace design that I have run across in my 45+ year career! Jose Maria Puig Doria (1926-2006), was born in Barcelona, Spain. He started his business in 1948 on Provenza street in Barcelona, and specialized in modernist sterling jewelry, and later added gold jewelry and precious objects to his repertoire. His career spanned decades, and his contributions to the art and design industries in Spain are immeasurable! (See my last photo of the artist circa 1990.) This superb modernist necklace measures 28" wearable length, and simply slips over the head and is without a closure. Measures about 1-1/8" widest, and weighs 87 grams total. Marked on one link as shown, "Puig Doria" and "925" for sterling silver quality. Very comfortable to wear, lays flat and stays there, and makes quite a statement! From the estate of a NYC collector who traveled the world for her career in publishing, and collected unusual and interesting pieces of wearable art along the way. She purchased this necklace in Spain during her years working and living in Europe. This necklace would look amazing on either a man or a woman! Excellent vintage condition.
