Back to reading Strunk & White's "The Elements of Style" like you do on an early Thursday evening in the Down Under (and I probably broke all the elements with this post). #writing #grammar #punctuation #WriteSky
Illustrating the notion of "punctuation", we see an old-fashioned, manual typewriter sitting on an old desk with a keyhole at the front; the desk itself is in what appears to be a library, for there are shelves filled with books on either side of it, stretching to the far wall. In the typewriter's platen is a sheet of white paper, on which are printed the characters: :Punctuation?
I wrote this last year. I'm not sure what was my impetus, but probably someone's trying to explain punctuation in a way I found prolix & imprecise.
I called it my "Punctuation Poem":
. stop
, splice
: elucidate
; juxtapose
( ) aside
— interrupt

Cartoon of people sitting in a circle at a meeting. One says, “…and then she called me a drama queen! Can you believe it!” with text dialog followed by lots of exclamation marks. Another responds, “How insensitive!” again with lots of exclamation marks. Among other remarks is also “I’ve tried using semicolons instead, but it just isn’t the same!” (Again, with a shower of exclamation marks). A sign nearby reads, “Punctuation Misuse Support Center – Exclamation Mark Group!! Wednesdays 7–8 pm.” Artwork by Debbie Ridpath Ohi.
I can't believe I missed National Exclamation Point Day, which was March 13th !!!!!!

How you shape your sentences, paragraphs, chapters is part of your personal style. Learning your style takes millions of words to the page. It evolves as you evolve. It is a good idea to continue to study English across your evolution as a writer.

I want to say again that your .word tools may give you incorrect advice. You should not rely on them to correct your grammar. Their advice may negatively affect your grammar. It is up to you to navigate your choices based on what you are trying to say.

You can find punctuation testing online. Usually these are free. You can print out such lessons and bring them to your writing group to share. Then you can argue the results. Practice helps based on your intensity to improve if you are struggling.

Doubt and lack of self confidence are common devils of most writers. Lack of education contributes to these issues. We call our doubts 'imposter syndrome' and struggle to improve post-education. Usually we do this alone and miserable. :::hugs:::

Most basic writing tools today have some type of ai incorporated into them. Unfortunately, these 'tools' are not particularly smart. They look for word combinations and highlight a problem. They don't actually think or write so they guess at solutions.

Punctuation is often a weakness in prose. It's even possible you have forgotten your high school English and being taught how to use quotes properly.
Punctuation devils many writers and indicates grammar issues for the reader. The rules are mean.

A woman and a man are standing in a cemetery. The man is looking at a tombstone and saying "That's cold." The tombstone reads, "Here lies Mitchell Smith, who 'hated' unnecessary quotation marks, speling errors, the Oxford comma."
I love the Oxford comma. My wife hates it. Somehow we make it work

I think of a semicolon as a thoughtful inhale as a character realizes there's something else they want to say about the same topic. #writing #punctuation

Does someone know anything about the practice of using a comma instead of an apostrophe? I've so far come across two writers doing this: one is late-18th century, and the other (pictured here) unknown but I reckon late-18th to mid-19th century. #spelling #punctuation #manuscripts

Oh, and also: why do both contain #punctuation in their names? Are we trying to alienate everyone post-GenX? 😁

Has the article writer ever considered using anything besides a comma (,)?

Yes, I know that "coffee flavored" should be hyphenated and there should be a period at the end of the sentence. I didn't write the song--merely copied and pasted the #lyrics.

So this is a book about symbols in literature, essentially #punctuation, written by someone called Colon?

There is a disconnect between what is discussed and debated in writing circles, online and off, and what publishers care about.
