Aton didn't, not really, though he knew enough about other corners to dampen his enthusiasm for this one.
As Aton carved a path in the crowd, bodies parted and left a current of information. Dada, data, to-do lists & research parameters. Aton had noise of his own to contend with, which was bad enough, so it was an inconvenience to pass a vexed scientist and have to swat the guy's inherently flawed thesis from consciousness. Normally, he'd skip The Skyway this time of day, just as the teeming masses arrived, all haggard and fresh from their fresh hells.
The skyway stretched between the towers of NIMH and was enclosed in glass, even underfoot, so that Aton could peer between his chucks and see down into the valley's swollen creek which divided two stands of ferns on separate berms that were newly dense with green and creeping yellow. Like everything, the gully was an experiment, and the reason he'd moved to Bethesda. (That was his story and he was sticking to it.) Conroy Milton built this just to lure him here.
If he walked quickly and purposefully, he could alert his twin who was back in Detroit, and if Atom had the time and the room to pace, he could sync to Aton's heart rate which might allow them to stroll the skyway together in an overlap of consciousness that was mostly useless since weather apps and gps. Anyone could do it, and everyone had done it by accident, but only if they moved solidly, methodically, as a hunter stalks a boar through the forest.

According to Joseph Campbell, every life is a journey and every soul a hero. Forward momentum forces the hero's hand. He enters a patterned world of quests and unfurling ferns. While hidden clues & easter eggs could tweak the trajectory, a character's overall arc was set. A life has narrative structure: turning points, ta-da reveals & crucible moments. Character growth was seemingly unavoidable, but don't blame unyielding fate. In every spiral, the hero makes round about the same choices, and then, next cycle, he's drawn in by familiar glimmers. Big events (and major setbacks) are the landmarks of a life, but there's still room for error. A character could die at any time - GAME OVER - or take a wrong turn in the maze. There are so many ways to lose, but so few paths to victory, even after dozens of simulations.
