You can contact DeWine’s office and ask him to veto this harmful bill! While this legislation is likely to pass, now is the time to PLAN, not to PANIC. This bill is not yet law. If this bill is signed by Gov. DeWine, it will go into effect 90 days from his signature. Even then, it is on individual school districts to create a policy to decide how school staff must act in face of this bill’s language, which can happen as late as July 1, 2025. While we are still in the waiting periods of this bill, you can start planning! Talk to your school leadership to see what a potential policy might look like. See if you can help shape the policy in a way that is less harmful to students. NASW Ohio is working on finalizing a sample draft policy that can be used as an advocacy tool. Think about what consent policies you have in place and what policies you might want to put in place once this bill is applicable. Think about ways you can talk to students in your life to help them prepare themselves for this bill to go into effect. NASW Ohio will also be hosting a webinar on Wednesday January 22, 2025 from 12-1pm to discuss some of the implications of this bill and ways to prepare yourself! Save the date!
