Racetrack Playa, a forgotten Star Wars scene We drove to Death Valley in California, destination Racetrack Playa. This dry lakebed is very remote. To reach it, you drive almost two hours on a terrible dirt road. It's worthwhile. The playa is at 400 feet elevation, and is enclosed by mountains. There is no outlet, so it turns into an icy lake in winter. It island with black rocks called Grandstand. We hiked up on the mountain next to the playa to get a higher vantage point the dry lakebed and island.
