Reactie Nijmegen Student Encampment Een woordvoerder: ‘De conclusie dat het inzetten van een politiehond onrechtmatig was, bevestigt wat wij al vanaf het begin hebben gezegd. Dit verandert niks aan het feit dat een van ons zwaargewond is geraakt en meerdere operaties heeft ondergaan. Geen enkele rechtszaak gaat het fysieke en psychologische trauma dat is aangericht ongedaan maken.’ ‘Daarnaast wordt continu geprobeerd het politieoptreden te rechtvaardigen met beschuldigingen tegen demonstranten. Het was escalatie die ontstond nadat beveiligers zelf geweld gebruikten, maar achteraf worden beschuldigingen jegens ons gebruikt om grootschalige politie-inzet met wapenstokken en honden te rechtvaardigen. Daar komt bij dat uit beelden die al vanaf de dag zelf op sociale media te zien waren, te zien is dat Radboud beveiligers actief betrokken waren in het politiegeweld. In die beelden zit een beveiliger zelfs bovenop een student.’ ‘Toch wordt de verantwoordelijkheid opvallend eenzijdig gelegd – vooral bij individuele demonstranten en één agent – terwijl de beslissingen die tot deze escalatie hebben geleid buiten beeld blijven. Het was het College van Bestuur dat besloot de politie in te schakelen en daarmee een situatie creëerde waarin een campusprotest eindigde met politiehonden, wapenstokken en twee zwaargewonde studenten. Überhaupt zou politie geen plaats moeten hebben op een universiteit.’
Reactie universiteit Collegevoorzitter Alexandra van Huffelen: ‘Dat een van onze studenten zo ernstig gewond is geraakt, is afschuwelijk. Dit heeft enorme impact gehad. In de eerste plaats op deze student zelf en ook op andere studenten, medewerkers en getuigen. Het is goed dat er helderheid is over wat zich heeft voorgevallen. De begeleider van deze politiehond zal zich moeten verantwoorden voor de rechter. We zullen de conclusie van het OM gaan bespreken met de academische gemeenschap.’

I am actually glad that the dean and chair have made the process which led to me leaving so clear. While they describe themselves as a ‘sanctuary for free thinkers’, what they actually describe is that one or two people at the university get to decide what is acceptable and unacceptable to say and think. They explicitly say that we are not allowed to have other opinions about Oct. 7th (and other acts of violence – remember I was told academics must condemn all violence). We must stick to the Zionist lies about that day, which have subsequently justified a genocide. I will never apologise for promoting a different narrative about a day that will rightly be celebrated by Palestinians as the start of the downfall of Zionism. People who praise ‘israel’s’ demonic violence in Gaza (an actual genocide), or Lebanon, have faced no repercussions whatsoever (they actually got invited on to campus to speak to students). Supporting genocide is acceptable if it’s carried out by ‘israel’, supporting a legitimate act of resistance carried out by occupied Palestinians is not.

I agree that what has happened here is a dark day for universities, and it is no surprise that it comes when someone dares to criticize Israel. Although I am leaving, I care about others at the university, and I hope that more colleagues and students will realise that this growing repression exercised by (unelected) university managers will only get worse and must be fought head on. That is why I decided to go public with this. Just a couple of additions: the social media code is an advisory code and cannot be used to discipline people. The code of conduct is so subjective, with things like ‘being a good role model’ or ‘respecting others’ left to the interpretation by one or two people at the top. That cannot be right. Finally, please please tell me when Milos became a spokesperson for students? Who does he represent? What is his relationship with CIDI? He is not Jewish himself, so how many Jewish students does he actually speak for? For one student (who is also a politician) to wield so much power must be questioned.
