Interview with the Vampire
by Anne Rice

3.5/5 - I'm glad I read this, it has a lot of interesting things to say but I got really bored about halfway through with just how long winded and verbose the narrator is. It felt like reading Crime and Punishment (backhanded compliment).

City employees have given notice they will be going on strike, so I went to the library today and took out as many books as I could, to take advantage of not having to return them on time.

Cover for the paperback edition of The Secret History by Donna Tartt. The title of the book is in large white font in the top half of the cover, with "The Original Bestseller" in small white text at the very top of the cover. The authour's name is in large white font in the bottom half of the cover, with a quote from The Times stating 'Haunting, compelling and brilliant'. In the middle of the cover in between the title and the authour's name there is a small golden medallion showing a figure in relief. The exact figure depicted in the medallion is unknown to the authour of this ALT text, however, The Secret History centres around Ancient Greek studies so it is likely this medallion is related to Greek history or culture.

The Secret History
by Donna Tartt

4.5/5 - Fantastic book, it grabbed me and didn't let go. The structure of the story served it well, the inciting incident occurring around the half way mark but spoken about right at the beginning and a slow burn up to the event. Ending = whoa.

Front cover of the 2018 book, "The Night of the Party" by Rachael English. A darkish pastel blue background with wintery or late autmunal leaves and stems in a large circle at the top 1/3 and bottom 1/3 of the book which also includes a crescent moon near the top and small orange stars in and around the circle of leaves. The main title and authour's name are in the middle 1/3. The authour's name is in large mustard cursive text, centred on the cover, their surname approx. 20% larger than their first name, and set below it. Above the name is smaller white text stating "The Number One Bestseller". The title of the book is underneath the authour's name in medium white text (approximately 75% larger than the "Number One Bestseller" text). Below the title is an image in light pastel blue showing a silhouette of a bottle of champagne and two champagne glasses with small bubbles rising from them. Below this image is a quote from authour Patricia Scanlan, text approximately 2/3 the size of the "Number One Bestseller" text, stating "A cracking page-turner in the best tradition of Maeve Binchy".

4.5/5 - Really enjoyed this. Main event happens a bit before my time but there were many nostalgia triggers from growing up in 90s Ireland. Good characters, good mysteries and reveals that surprised but weren't contrived. Loved it.

Cover art for a paperback edition of We Have Always Lived In The Castle by Shirley Jackson. The artwork features an off-white background with blackberries hanging from distinctly thorny vines along side their leaves. The book's title is strung along the vines in various places over the off-white background in a typewriter-like font in black. The author's name is in the same font but in a light green either side of a blackberry in the middle of the lower half of the image. A quote from The New York Times is shown on the cover, stating "A witch's brew of eerie power and startling novelty." The Penguin Books logo of a black and white penguin standing on green oval background is shown in the bottom right of the cover, superimposed over a leaf.

4/5 - I really liked this book, though I felt the ending let it down. I would have preferred more tension or ambiguity. I loved the creeping dread and the suspense and it felt timeless whilst also immersing me in its world.

Cover art of the hardcover edition of Exodus: The Archimedes Engine by Peter F. Hamilton, a sci-fi novel released in 2024. The artwork is yellowish gold shapes on a black background showing what appears to be a planet in the middle, and long thin rectangles angled like an X on the four corner of the images as if rwaching towards the planet. At the bottom there is a small flat plane with a humanoid figure standing upon it. The words "The Archimedes Engine" are in the top third of the image in white text, "Exodus" is the middle, superimposed over planet, with subtext reading "Become the Traveler", all in white, and the author's name in the bottom third in the same yellow/gold as the rest of the piece.

5/5 - great book, but only for those willing to undertake such a long read. It felt like a cross between Mass Effect and The Expanse, without feeling too derivative
