Three-story frame Queen Anne-style home in dilapidated condition. The house has a hipped roof, a round turret on the corner and a front-facing gable. There is fish scale siding on the top of the turret and the gable. The rest of the siding is narrow boards painted maroon except for one section of the turret that looks like it is covered in black electrical tape. The roofs are in bad shape, the paint is peeling, and some parts of the facade look about ready to fall off.

American artist Faith Ringgold painted “Woman Looking in a Mirror” in 1966, during her groundbreaking “American People Series,” when she was using figuration to confront race, gender, beauty, and power in the United States. A mirror here is not a symbol of vanity. It becomes a tool of self-recognition in a culture that too often distorted or denied Black women’s personhood. A Black woman sits in a red chair in sharp left profile, raising a small oval hand mirror toward her face. Her skin is painted in rich reddish-brown tones, and Ringgold outlines her features with deep blue-black shadows that make the cheekbone, nose, neck, and shoulder feel sculptural and intense. She has short, softly waved dark hair, long lashes, and red lips that echo her pointed red fingernails. A thin bra strap curves over her shoulder, and behind her a grid of window panes opens onto dense, stylized leaves in blue, green, and black. The mirror reflects her face frontally, but not quite as a perfect double. Instead, the reflection feels simplified, quieter, almost withheld. The image turns a private act of looking into a charged moment of self-study, as though she is measuring how she appears and how she knows herself from within. Ringgold, born in Harlem, New York in 1930, was already forging the political vision that would define her career as an artist, activist, and storyteller. This painting asks who controls an image: the sitter, the viewer, or the society that frames both. The frontal reflection and side profile refuse to fully merge, suggesting the gap between public identity and inner selfhood. In that tension, Ringgold creates something both elegant and radical. The woman is composed, observant, and self-aware. She is not available for easy consumption; she is engaged in the serious work of seeing herself on her own terms.
