The easiest ways to spot an amateurish story is by a trite and time-worn expression. No really good writer would have anything to do with one of them, unless he was trying to be funny. Whenever I saw "innocent babe," "flashy gangster," "you should see the other guy," or met a villain who "sneered" every time he opened his mouth, I began to suspect that the story would not be worth finishing. I've always regarded "You should see the other guy!" as an amusing jape in response to any minor injury; I was thus especially delighted to discover that it was listed in Writer's Digest in *1939* as an example of something so trite as to doom any writing that contains it.
