#Texas declared independence from #Mexico on #ThisDayInHistory in 1836. Against your school myths: #RepublicOfTexas was never recognized as independent, its leaders broke loyalty oaths, it held a tiny part of the state, and only US intervention secured its separation from Mexico.

Helping secure #slavery in the US, #JohnTyler arranged a treaty with the #RepublicOfTexas for annexation. It was signed by #JamesKPolk on #ThisDayInHistory in 1845. He then stationed troops at its claimed border, which was legally Mexican territory, prompting war the next year.
