When Eric Clapton's Bigoted 1976 Rant Sparked Rock Against Racism Eric Clapton went on a racist rant onstage at a 1976 concert, which sparked Britain's Rock Against Racism campaign.

You are entitled to your opinion about Clapton as a guitarist but Clapton is an objectively shit human being, just remember that.

#RiversOfBlood – How #EnochPowell poisoned Britain

How did one speech poison British politics? What led Powell to deliver it? What can it teach us about the timeless tricks of anti-immigrant oratory? Did he merely […]

Farage has honed in to what divided the country back in the 70s & 80s. And has now re-invented the fantastical fuckwits from that era. Fred Perry Tshirts & Doc Martin boots, Skinheads & braces. This is the England of that era, This is where he finds natural support. @lbc.co.uk

So Idon’t doubt that Starmer could act now if he felt it were necessary.
Arguably there was a streak of ruthlessness in his decision to tell his
biographer Tom Baldwin that he “deeply regrets” using the term “island of
strangers” in a recent speech.

#StephenMiller has taken his “society of strangers” needing cleansing ethos in his post to Gov #GavinNewsom from Enoch Powell's #RiversofBlood speech, which became a rallying cry for #racists & the far right in the UK. PM #KeirStarmer tried to push this ethos in his "island of strangers" speech.

Took down the last boss! Only on the third attempt, but he's definitely a tier harder than the rest. I'm not sure I like how mobile he is, as #Executor I spend 80% of the fight chasing him down.

#RiversOfBlood really carried the fight though, gave me some range I don't normally have.

As well as speaking about “an island of strangers” - which some critics
claimed echoed Enoch Powell’s 1968 “rivers of blood” speech about a future
multicultural Britain where white people “found themselves made strangers
in their own country” - the prime minister talked of “taking back control of
our borders” and ending a “squalid chapter” of rising immigration.

The interfaith letter, shared exclusively with the Guardian, has been
coordinated by the UK Jewish refugee charity HIAS+JCORE, which works for
a more compassionate refugee policy and narrative.

Starmer getting his "Big Book Of Bad Jews And Good Jews" and seeing if these are on the approved list.

They're aligned with Refugees, whom Starmer has been told to 'unperson' so they're probably the 'bad' sort of Jews who are left wing and value human life […]

Liz Saville Roberts, the Plaid Cymru leader at Westminster, has issued this
statement about the PM’s blunt response to her question at PMQs. (See

44 The prime minister’s outburst showed that my question struck a nerve. The
expressions on the faces of many Labour MPs told their own story - plenty of
them know I was right. If his convictions change with the political weather, it’s
no surprise that support for Labour in Wales, as across Britain, is falling
through the floor.

The Labour Left relying on other Parties to voice their concerns because they have no voice within their own Party.
Yet still they reside within it, not making any real difference and just enabling the Fascism coming from Blue Labour.

Starmer was clearly echoing Powell. But what is not clear is whether, for
Starmer and/or the person who write the speech, this was intentional,
unconscious (people can remember phrases without recalling where they
came from), or complete coincidence (politicians more than 50 years apart,
‘making a similar argument, by deploying the same, not-particularly-unusual
word).

Powell’s Rivers of Blood speech was denounced as racist as soon as he
delivered it (although not so much for his comments about native Britons
finding mass migration unsettling, where many people would agree he had a
point, but for his suggestion that it would culminate in violence, oppression
and social collapse, where he has turned out to be hopelessly wrong) and it is
still widely viewed as abhorrent. Yesterday Starmer was condemned by
leftwingers for saying something that sounded Powellite.

Starmer's use of phrase echoing Enoch Powell was accident’,

not intentional, says source close to No 10

In an interview on Newsnight last night Arlene Foster, the former DUP
leader, said she thought that someone in Downing Street would have known
that “island of strangers” was a clear echo of what Enoch Powell said in his
Rivers of Blood speech. Asked if Keir Starmer would have been aware of the
similarities in the language, she replied:

44 Somebody did Downing Street, I'm convinced of it,

“Island of strangers” is a very particular form of words, it’s almost a term of
art. So where did it come from? And who was the person that said this should go
into the speech?

But Starmer’s allies are saying it was genuine mistake, and not an intentional
echo of what Powell said. “It was an accident, and not designed to cause a
row,” according to a source close to No 10 familiar with what happened. The
source accepts that someone should have realised that the “island of
strangers” phrase had Powellite connotations. But the fact that this was not
picked up is attributed to an error, and not an attempt to reference the Rivers
of Blood speech.

They really take us for cretins, don't they?

Starmer 'accidentally' took on the spirit of Enoch Powell.....is this some kind of walk down?

Pathetic, even Arlene Foster is saying he's gone too far....the fucking DUP!!

The "Rivers of Blood" speech was made by the British politician Enoch Powell on 20 April 1968 to a meeting of the Conservative Political Centre in Birmingham. In it Powell, the then Shadow Secretary of State for Defence in the Shadow Cabinet of Ted Heath, strongly criticised the rates of immigration from the Commonwealth (mostly former colonies of the British Empire) to the United Kingdom since the Second World War. He also opposed the Race Relations Bill, an anti-discrimination bill which upon receiving royal assent as the Race Relations Act 1968 criminalised the refusal of housing, employment, or public services to persons on the grounds of colour, race, or ethnic or national origin. Powell himself called it "the Birmingham speech"; "Rivers of Blood" alludes to a prophecy from Virgil's Aeneid which

As I look ahead, I am filled with foreboding; like the Roman, I seem to see 'the River Tiber foaming with much blood'.[1]

The speech was a national controversy, and it made Powell one of the most talked-about and divisive politicians in Britain. Heath, the leader of the Conservative Party at the time, dismissed him from the Shadow Cabinet the day after the speech.[2] According to most accounts the popularity of Powell's views on immigration might have been a decisive factor in the Conservative Party's unexpected victory at the 1970 general election, although he became one of the most persistent opponents of the subsequent Heath ministry.[2][3]

Anyone who’s ever interacted with any care workers feels a huge debt of
gratitude to them, and yes, newsflash, this is irrespective of whether they
were born in the UK. If you know any care workers, it’s because they’re
caring for you or someone you love. It’s a pretty tight bond, far more intimate
and meaningful than any you've ever had with your MP. To hear that we risk
becoming an “island of strangers”, as Starmer has said, because of foreign-
born care workers - well, it’s hard to muster the appropriate outrage because
it’s just so patently untrue.
