Booker T. Washington (Apr. 5, 1856 – Nov. 14, 1915), born into slavery, became a leading Black intellectual and founded Tuskegee University. With Julius Rosenwald of Sears, Roebuck and Company, he helped build schools that doubled as community hubs in the South.

Founded in 1927, Fairmont was Griffin’s first neighborhood where Black families could buy land and build homes. In 1929, with support from the Rosenwald Fund, Vocational High School opened, later becoming Fairmont High School. Schools integrated in 1970.
