A plant with a pink flower is blooming in a wetland. This is a Rose Pogonia, the subject of the poem by Robert Frost. Rose Pogonia (Pogonia ophioglossoides) is a member of the Orchid family which grows in bogs in the Adirondack Mountains and sports a single rose-pink flower from late June through mid- to late July. Rose Pogonia is listed as an obligate wetland, meaning that it grows only in wetlands, usually in full sun. It may be found in sphagnum bogs, fens, wet meadows, roadside ditches, and acidic swamps throughout the northeast.
For though the grass was scattered,
Yet every second spear
Seemed tipped with wings of color,
That tinged the atmosphere.
Robert Frost. Rose Pogonias.
