Herald titan nears return after months of medical calamity After an infection moved to his heart, economics editor Ross Gittins fell critically ill. After months in hospital, he will soon return to the Herald.

#RossGittins, 78, fell ill during a holiday in late October last year. An infection had moved to his heart, leaving him in a critical condition. Three doctors worked to save his life in a marathon eight-hour surgery, and he spent weeks in intensive care.

Technically that worked in the 1950's when Maslow's hierarchy of needs was believed to be valid.

The good economists like #RossGittins and the comedian economist on the #abc have been calling out that this strategy hasn't worked since the 80's at least #auspol 1/2

But if economic rent is bad for the economy - if it reduces efficiency and holds back living standards - doesn't that mean taxing it, even taxing it quite heavily, can help reduce the budget deficit without harming the economy? Ross Gittins, winner of the 2025 E.J. Craigie Writing Award

Had to disagree with #RossGittins - AlboMP just a time-server / time-waster of a PM.
Inaction, or worse, on so many critical issues; climate change, tax reform, education, inter-generational equity, freedom of information, NACC, public & affordable housing, infrastructure…

"Maybe one day we’ll wake up and find a better way to manage the strength of demand. Meanwhile, we’ll suffer from the Reserve’s reluctance to stop fighting the last war against inflation and start fighting the next war against uncertainty and weak growth in the economy." #RossGittins

"This is another strike against the use of interest rates to fight inflation and smooth demand. When rates rise to discourage people with mortgages from spending on other goods and services, they actually encourage the retired to spend more."

We face a choice between a weak leader in #AnthonyAlbanese (someone who knows what needs to be done but lacks the courage to do much of it) & #PeterDutton (someone who doesn’t care what needs to be done but thinks he can use division to snaffle the top job).
