Amazon is reengineering the last mile Robots, drones, rural roads, and fresh food. Amazon president and CEO, Andy Jassy's letter is a blueprint for total delivery dominance.

Alexandra Fasulo (@alexandrafasulo) "The people out in rural America are anti-tech. AI is coming whether they like it or not." I see a lot of city-slickers writing this on social media today... people who've never lived outside of the tri-state area. They think the land vs. solar/wind/AI battle is a simple one, one in which the "country bumpkins" are pushing back on technology and progress. If you live in a city and have your whole life, I am asking you to read what I am about to write here. This debate isn't one about technology at all. As you can see, I use social media to its fullest every day. I film and edit videos. I manage an online reading publication. I even drive a hybrid vehicle. So many others in the country are using technology to its fullest to stay afloat as well, from robotics and drones in farming, to Venmo and QR code checkouts at farm stands. This debate isn't about technology at all. You need to listen to what these people are trying to tell you - and soon. Through data centers, big solar and wind, and battery storage, we are losing the land that feeds us. They are building these complexes on PRIME farmland - not just throwaway land. They are building them on top of designated habitats that are connected to multi hundred acre ecosystems. They are building them on wetlands, near rivers, and over unstable bedrock. They are puncturing aquifers trying to drill under rivers. Those living near data centers have their wells run dry. Battery storage, big solar and wind are leaching chemicals, PFAS, and glass shards into the soil below them. They are destroying sensitive land that's part of the food you eat. And NO ONE would be throwing a fit over this if they were building these monstrosities in already-zoned commercial/industrial parks where they belong. Instead, they are using it as a Trojan horse to gobble up productive farmland that's been feeding us since the inception of our country. The fencing is displacing wildlife in every direction. The herbicides to maintain the facility sites are killing the pollinators. The rural way of life in America is disintegrating - it's pitting neighbor v. neighbor because the money is "just that good." You may not see it now from the inside of a city. But you will feel it very, very soon when the food you're accustomed to triples in price, or declines in availability. You're only able to live your city life BECAUSE of the people in the country trying to tell all of you we have a massive problem on our hands. And it has nothing to do with technology.

Health is holistic, but not having access to a variety of fresh, nutritious food plays a huge part in the detrimental effects of living in a food desert. Some people simply don't have the luxury of choice.

Kentucky farmers already walk a tightrope 🚜🌾. Higher fuel + fertilizer costs hit small operations hardest. When global systems crack, states like ours feel the shock fast.

USDA’s Section 515 Program for Rural Affordable Housing Faces Phase-Out The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Section 515 program, established in 1963, has been a cornerstone of affordable rental housing in rural America, helping to finance over 533,000 apartments and townhouses for low-income residents. By offering below-market loans to private and nonprofit developers, Section 515 ensured rents remained around 30% of tenants’ income, often as low as $325 per month compared to $800-$1,100 in typical rural markets. However, no new loans have been issued since 2011, and the program is now gradually phasing out as existing loans mature, with nearly all properties expected to exit the program by 2050. Research indicates that nonprofit ownership and larger management organizations significantly increase the likelihood of properties remaining affordable, while for-profit owners and small management operations are more likely to convert units to market-rate housing. Other subsidies, such as Section 8 vouchers and Low-Income Housing Tax Credits, also help preserve affordability. Despite USDA preservation initiatives and proposed legislation like the Rural Housing Service Reform Act, significant challenges remain, including an estimated $5.6 billion in repairs needed to maintain current affordable units. Without renewed federal intervention, rural communities could see a substantial decline in affordable housing as owners gain flexibility to raise rents or sell properties.
