This is an #SAComics workshop event, Durban(ish) (031 area code), 21 March, R300.

I know the people who are organising this and they have a good comics (and comix) track record.

The Comic Jam Cape Town poster. It's a black and white illustration of a guy in a beanie, T-shirt, and jeans, wielding a giant pencil, battling a hog alien with a laser pistol. There are art supplies fling in all directions and ink spilled on the ground. The guy is saying "Only R50 per person" and the alien is saying "Wowzers!")

The text reads:
Comic Jam Cape Town
Every 1st Sunday
11H00-13H00 @ Obz Books,

There is a QR code for a WhatsApp number, which probably is for contacting the organiser, Warren Raysdorf.

A photo of the cover of The Light At The Frankenstein Place, with a pixel art picture of a skull and crossbones and "A Tiny Adventure By Mandy J Watson" written at the bottom. A hand is holding the zine and you can see how tiny it is (A8) but there's a lot going on inside!

A hand is holding the second zine, The Time Machine, which has a pixel art image of an analogue clock with the arms spinning. The text reads "A Tiny Adventure By Mandy J Watson". The zine is also A8 but it has a few more pages and a little surprise in the middle!

If you're in South Africa, buy my zines for Christmas!

On the weekend I dropped off a big order at @thebooklounge.bsky.social and they're also available elsewhere (see below) but I want to give a special shout out to The Book Lounge in Cape Town, which has been particularly supportive.

Reminder: Comic Jam Cape Town is happening again tomorrow, 7 September, at Obz Books, but at 11am, not 10am. Apparently the coffee station has now also been opened at the back of the shop

I won't be able to make it because I'll be at @openbookfestival.bsky.social but I'll be there in Oct. #SAComics

There are also #SAComics people in the marketplace, including @losynacomics.bsky.social, Tyler Pike, and Andy Mason. (No photos yet - hopefully I'll have some tomorrow.)

The jam was suitable for people of all skill levels, although there were quite a few #SAComics creators in attendance too. (Which resulted in catchup conversations and an impromptu comics and zines swap after the jam ended.)

For this #SAComicsSunday I'm going to do a quick post about an event that happened today - Comic Jam Cape Town, which took place at Obz Books in Observatory.

The cover of The Light At The Frankenstein Place: A Tiny Adventure By Mandy J Watson.

There is 1-bit pixel art at the top of an open book that says "1" (because t's the first in an intended series) and 1-bit pixel art further down of a skull and crossbones.

The zine is 32 pages, hand cut from a printed A4 sheet and then stapled, and has a 160gsm cover.

Consequently it is A8 in size (ie very tiny). #SAComics

A poster from Obz Books showing an illustration of four excited people drawing.

It says: Comic Jam Cape Town, only R50 per person, Sunday 3rd August, 10H00-12H00 @ Obs [sic] Books.

There's also a QR code but I don't know where it goes.

Open Book Crowdfunding – The Book Lounge

A donation drive for @openbookfestival.bsky.social in Cape Town has just been announced. This festival is vital for South African and African literature, and has long been a supporter of the #SAComics community as well, so if you have any money to spare please help:

Here's the previous thread, an exploration of Space Diner by British writer James Roblin and #SAComics creator Luis Tolosana, which was originally from 2015 but was tweaked in 2023.

I wanted to write an itch blog post about this before I started talking about it on Bluesky but a few copies are out in the wilds of Cape Town so, uh, I made an interactive zine based on my little game of the same name.

It's for sale! R20 in SA (excl postage, which is a complication).

The Space Diner comic was originally inspired by this artwork by Luis Tolosana of the interior of a diner filled with alien creatures who are hanging out at all the booths. A waitress, who has small wings, is walking past in the foregound with a tray of drinks. (She is one of the characters in this scene who made it into the comic, albeit adjusted because in the comic she also has a tail. The aliens at the booth on the far right also made it into the comic, although they were redesigned in the 2023 version.) The diner is lit by fancy globes and the back wall has "Falcon Comics", Luis Tolosana's comics brand for a few years in the mid 2010s, written on it in large letters, along with the Falcon Comics logo.

#SAComicSunday: Space Diner is a four page digital comic by British writer James Roblin and #SAComics creator Luis Tolosana that I don't think was ever printed. Two versions exist: the original, which was published in 2015, and an updated version that was published in 2023.
