Today for #saintsonSaturday we are in #Buckinghamshire at the church of #NorthCrawley. Today we have a rare saint, seldom depicted in churches in England: St #Blaise said to be a healer and a bishop. Anyway here he is:

today for #saintsonSaturday we visit #Holne Church on #Dartmoor which has a screen believed to have been painted in the early 16th century. The paintings are rustic but no less interesting for that. Here we have #StSidwell, a local saint from #Devon.

For #saintsonSaturday today we are off to #Norfolk to the church of #WiggenhallStMary with a colourful early 16th century screen featuring a number of saints. This image is of #StScholastica . Not a saint we find too often in English churches, she was the foundress of #Benedictine nuns.

For #saintsonSaturday we are back in Devon and at the Church of #BucklandintheMoor on Dartmoor. The paintings are in places crude whereas elsewhere, as in this painting of #StSimon , complete with his saw, the details are keenly etched. The paintings are said to be early 16th century.

Today for #saintsonSaturday we visit #StEdmunds Church in #Southwold in #Suffolk and one of the most richly decorated screens in the county. It dates to the mid 15th century.
Here we see #StPaul, defaced slightly during the 17th century but still recognisable and resplendent.

An unusual "saint" today for #SaintsonSaturday in the form of this painting of King #HenryVI at #Widdecombe Church on #Dartmoor in #Devon
Although the pope was petitioned to make Henry a saint, he was never formally confirmed as one. Yet here he is on a panel among other saints.

Today's rather late #SaintsonSaturday takes us to #Kimbolton Church in #Cambridgeshire for this (slightly defaced) and unusually armoured #StEdmund complete with the arrows of his martyrdom... The paintings probably date from 15th century

Today for #SaintsonSaturday it is back to #Norfolk and the #NorfolkBroads. This image of St #Agnes is from the glorious screen in #Ranworth Church.
The painted panel is 15th century, a vast canvas on which to picture the saints and a riot of colour. A wonderful mediaeval survivor

Today for #saintsonSaturday we have a painted panel of #StAugustine from #BurnhamNorton Church in #Norfolk. Unusually this was not part of the rood screen but one of a series of painted panels on the pulpit, including, appropriately enough for a pulpit, the Four #Doctors of the Church.

Beautifully executed, probably #German, late 15th century?

#SaintsonSaturday today we'll go with a panel painting, sadly faded with the centuries but still enough remaining to see it was skillfully executed.
This is from the church of #MarstonMoretaine in #Bedfordshire.
Not strictly a saint this time, but the prophet #Isiah

This sumptuous image of #StJames comes from a painted screen in #Southwold Church in #Suffolk
The face has been "defaced" a bit by iconoclasts but thankfully it was a half-hearted effort
