A pair of Sandhill Cranes is tending to their nest. The image shows the changing of the guard. Both male and female take turns sitting on the nest to keep the eggs warm. Our nights are still below freezing. Here, the females is exiting on the right and the male is about to take his turn on the nest.
A Sandhill Crane male is standing over two pale green eggs with light brown speckles and is about to sit with the eggs to keep them warm. It was a very cold Spring day in Wisconsin.
It was my kind of day yesterday. I got to sit with two different pairs of #SandhillCranes. This pair already has eggs. The nest looks minimal, but for cranes tending a nest, these two birds are exceptional. Here they are with the changing of the guard, then the male is about to take his turn.
