Or just one of a number of sarsens in a 'natural' spread that a farmer finally wanted to get rid of. There are, afterall, various dotted about the area as well as ones in actual prehistoric monuments like the Tidcombe barrow.

Here's the Tidcombe barrow and one of its #sarsens

A few months later, Rev G H Engleheart FSA write to Harold. He told him that in the 1890s, elder residents of Chute had described how the Kenward Stone had been carted off a farm, where it had lain with other #sarsens, to get it out of the way. Its companions had been buried.

Although there aren't many #sarsens in England formed with with similar patterns (maybe one in Hampshire that was noted in 1975, thanks @SocAntiquaries for the archive reference), check out 'gogotte' which is a similar stuff formed in Paris Basin sands:...

Sudden thought: this was being surveyed and drawn at just about the time that the Marquis of Blandford was taking #sarsens from Clatford to Whiteknights (now @UniofReading and home to @UniRdg_Arch).

Regrettably Dymock drew (some) trees but not stones...

We saw some rather good #sarsens underpinning St Michael's chancel too. But I think this might be my favourite. Despite being so small, it was important to the builders to incorporate it respectfully in this wall (maybe it's huge and the rest of it is behind the wall!)

My first visit to some #sarsens at Aston Tirrold and Aston Upthorpe, guided by @Anna_Dillon

Let's start with some #geology. Thanks to @BritGeoSurvey we can see all sorts of chalk here, including a thin seam of Totternhoe Stone, plus Glauconitic marl and Greensand to the NE.

It's time to take the Bournemouth Belle to #SarsenCountry

Next time you promenade through the Town Gardens, look closely at the rockeries. In amongst them are #sarsen stones from 100km away.

It's not just wealthy Georgian noblemen who used #sarsens in landscape garden design!

Let's return to #Kent and visit @EnglishHeritage St Augustine's Abbey #Canterbury

This is the strangest place in #SarsenCountry.

Two large #sarsens, one carefully carved, had been used in the foundations of the tenth century church. What had they been before they were hardcore?
