PODCAST: @jenniferfearing.bsky.social was a key player in the negotiations to pass #SB54, a landmark bill that regulates plastic waste. @cagovernornewsom.bsky.social signed the bill, but as we all know, passing legislation is one thing, implementation is another

📦 ♻️ SB54, California's ambitious #plastics and #packaging bill, sets some of the strongest standards in the entire world! #ZeroWaste #CircularEconomy #Plastic #Packaging #SB54
We analyzed my #SB54 and other negotiations as case studies that brought stakeholders from all sorts of industries, local governments, and advocates together to solve tough public policy problems.
@governor.ca.gov must now support strong implementing regulations by CalRecycle so #SB54 can take effect as it was intended. #PlasticPollution #ActOnPlastic #SourceReduction #CircularEconomy #ProducerResponsiblity
There's one step left to fulfill the promise of #SB54, which “goes further than any other state on cutting plastics production at the source and continues to build a circular economy that is necessary to combat climate change.” And it's in the hands of @governor.ca.gov. #ActOnPlastic
The California State Legislature and @governor.ca.gov recognized the need for a "wholesale rewriting of the rules" when they enacted #SB54 in 2022. This is landmark legislation that – for the first time – holds producers responsible for the plastic waste they create. www.gov.ca.gov/2022/06/30/g...
“Prices may rise at first, but well-designed laws that encourage companies to choose more environmentally friendly packaging should lower costs overall by helping them avoid fees for unsustainable practices.” @gavinnewsom.bsky.social @calrecycle.bsky.social #sb54
California can lead the way & help #EndPlasticPollution. @governor.ca.gov: It's time to uphold the promise you made when you signed #SB54 -- the most ambitious and comprehensive plastics law in the world: "Our kids deserve a future free of plastic waste and all its dangerous impacts." #leadership
Nothing pairs with a chat about plastic pollution quite like... a single-use plastic water bottle. Cheers, Governor. 🥤

🚨BREAKING: Glendale, CA just TERMINATED its ICE detainee contract.🚨
This is a powerful move for local control, public safety, and human rights. The city will no longer house federal immigration detainees proving that

#SB54 shenanigans continue: 23 lawmakers say #CalRecycle exceeded its authority in the new draft regs for the state's landmark plastic legislation and undermined the law. www.latimes.com/environment/...
In the continuing saga of CA's plastic law, CalRecycle introduced draft regs re chem recycling based on a report you can't access unless you pay $187 -which is kind of a scam, bc no standards or guidelines are in report. 🤷♀️ #plasticwaste @gavinnewsom.bsky.social #SB54 www.latimes.com/environment/...

We honored Director Zoe Heller of CalRecycle for her remarkable dedication to protecting our ocean and communities, and who led a robust two-year public engagement process to develop regulations implementing #SB54. Her commitment and that of her team are a model of what public service looks like.

We honored Sen. Catherine Blakespear, who consistently “walks the talk” with zero waste initiatives and works to fully implement #SB54, which mandates reduction of single-use plastic and allocates funds to communities hit hard by the impacts of single-use plastics.

We have a big win to celebrate! Thanks to California's bold leadership in enacting #SB54, we can say goodbye to plastic foam takeout food containers. The statewide ban took effect because producers didn't reach a 25 percent recycling rate by Jan. 1. #PlasticPollution #ActOnPlastic #CircularEconomy
In addition to protecting our ocean from #plasticpollution, #SB54 will protect Californians from the rising costs of waste management by requiring the folks responsible for all this packaging (producers) to pay for their waste.

Despite @governor.ca.gov 's past concern about #plastic, #styrofoam can still be purchased in stores and online throughout CA. It was banned on Jan. 1. But the gov's office still has not acknowledged it, leaving some stores and producers confused. 🤷♀️ #SB54 www.latimes.com/environment/...

#SB54 is the law in California. Gov. @gavinnewsom.bsky.social and our legislators must make sure the law’s goals and timelines are met. Thank you for stepping up and speaking out for the health of our communities and our ocean. Stay connected for updates: mbayaq.co/3dLICu1
California Gov. @gavinnewsom.bsky.social failed last week to implement #SB54 – the nation's strongest plastic reduction law. That is not the last word! Read the statement from the Aquarium, @oceana.bsky.social, and @oceanconservancy.bsky.social. www.montereybayaquarium.org/newsroom/pre...
“I’m concerned that any ‘redo’ of plastic pollution reduction rules may let plastic companies weaken the law. We’re counting on @cagovernornewsom.bsky.social to protect all Californians and our environment.” @environmentca.bsky.social #SB54

“The plastic pollution scourge continues to foul our most pristine places… while we dither over our regulatory approach.
We must immediately get back on track to release the regs that govern the roll out of the Plastic Pollution Reduction Act.” #SB54

Addressing the single-use plastic crisis *should* be costly for the industries creating it.
@cagovernornewsom.bsky.social @gavinnewsom.bsky.social wants you to keep paying for all that waste?
Let’s hope he’s serious about keeping #SB54 commitment.

In 2022 CA passed a groundbreaking law to reduce single-use plastic packaging that harms wildlife, pollutes communities, and contributes to climate change emissions. Environmental laws are under attack— @governor.ca.gov must stand firm against industry pressure and ensure #SB54 is fully implemented.
