Old 1913 newspaper advertisement that reads: If you cannot think of anything else let us show you a knife. For boys, girls, ladies and men. Prices 25c to $5.00. Clark Witbeck Co. Community Silver Headquarters
"Let us show you a knife" really didn't take off as a marketing catchphrase. Let's bring it back.

A photograph from 1913, showing two buildings – a carriage barn to the left, with a carriage parked outside, and an ice house in the center background, painted with local advertising signs – submerged in flood waters of the Mohawk River. This real photo postcard of a 1913 flood along Scotia’s Dyke shows the levels the Mohawk River used to reach on a regular basis before the modern Barge Canal brought significantly more control of the river. The building on the postcard with the painted advertisement for Barney’s was the Collins Lake Ice warehouse. Dated April 6, 1913, the writer tells Mrs. E. Howard of Dolgeville: “This picture was taken just this end of the dyke near Sanders this is the way the dyke looked, where the water was so high it was a sight this is four times i have seen it like this the river and the lake was one body of water.”
My latest #localHistory post looks at my hometown's biggest park, Collins Park, long a center of community along the #MohawkRiver. As some old pictures show, it was sometimes hard to tell apart from the river during floods. I also found a surprise […]

A photograph of a man wearing a large cap, what appears to be a mid-weight, mid-length jacket and trousers, standing on a vast field of broken ice on a frozen river. The low shoreline is in the far distance.
The back of the post card, with the penciled inscription "Dick on Mohawk river at Schenetady [sic] in 1917 while working in G.E." The right side of the postcard is divided, placing it after 1907, and the stamp box is surrounded by "AZO," the Kodak brand of photographic paper used, and four triangles in the corners which were used in 1904-1918, according to one source. Happily, the captioner dated this for us anyway.
This is an old #rppc #postcard that I bought at a shop in #Schenectady a couple of years back. Fascinated with it but never sure just what to do with it. It's a real photo postcard showing "Dick on Mohawk River at Schenectady in 1917 while working in G.E." […]

This view of the old house that now contains the Scotia Public Library is from the gable end, showing the wrap-around porch, the shuttered windows on the upper stories, a sunroom extension to the right on the park side, and another porch behind that sunroom, which has since disappeared. The house is low but has three stories, with a pitched roof angled over the upper two stories.
On my #Localhistory blog, I explore some of the history of the 1730 building that houses the cutest little library in the world (in my estimation), and one of the places that fundamentally shaped me. Here's the story of Scotia, NY's Abraham Glen house […]

A color photograph of a very old clapboard-covered house. The clapboard is weathered and unpainted. Small windows are seen on either side of a crooked screen door; in the upper story, just below the roofline, are even smaller windows. A clothesline runs from one of the lower windows, with various dishcloths and other rags hanging on it from wooden clothespins. Some small potted flowers sit on a bench beneath the clothesline. In the foreground there is an iron hand-pump on a wooden deck over a well. The pump spout is covered with a rag meant to strain out rust. A galvanized watering can and two plastic buckets, one yellow and one green, sit on the well deck.
My great great aunt's house in West Glenville, NY, where I spent many summer days in the 1960s and '70s. While it had electricity, it did not have indoor plumbing. We had to draw water from the pump in this picture – drawn through shale, it was quite tasty […]

A woman in a pantsuit crosses a downtown street under an umbrella. In the background, another group of pedestrians crosses in front of stopped cars in a parallel crosswalk. The background is a typical run-down 1970s downtown, with a Proctor's theater marquee on the left (showing "The Other Side of Midnight" and "Race for Your Life Charlie Brown"), a large local department store (The Carl Company), and various other small businesses in a smattering of non-unified buildings. it is raining lightly and everything looks wet and gray.
Downtown #Schenectady NY, probably autumn 1977. A dreary day in what was then a dreary place, even though I loved it. The Proctor's Theatre on the left has survived and expanded, the old local department store hung on into the early '90s, everything else has […]
