This beautiful image of the Trifid Nebula, assembled by Rob Gendler, shows lanes of dark dust trisecting the glowing gas. This is a region of new star formation some 9000 lightyears away.

We see a spiral galaxy of stars with a big bar of stars across the center and two giant spiral arms of star coming off the ends of the bar. It is nicknamed the Meathook Galaxy, because it resembles a giant meathook.
