Panel 1: Tim Drake sits slouched in a chair in the Batcave, wearing a red hoodie, looking dejected. Narration: “I think my days as Robin are numbered.” Panel 2: Batman looms behind Tim, questioning him: “Tim. Eddie Drake isn’t your uncle, is he? In fact, Eddie Drake doesn’t exist.” Tim admits: “True.” Panel 3: Close-up of Tim, ashamed: “I screwed up in a big way. And in doing so, I committed the one unforgivable sin—I got caught.” Panel 4: Batman leans in, explaining: “You didn’t want to enter the foster care system and didn’t want to become my son. You wanted to live as an early-emancipated adult, but the likelihood of any court granting you such status was nil.” Panel 5: Batman continues: “So, you took the decision out of their hands by creating a fictional uncle.” Tim replies: “Yes.” Panel 6: Silhouette of Batman standing over Tim. Batman states: “You forged a new will for your father and watergated his lawyer’s offices to substitute your fake for the original.” Tim adds: “And I altered their computer records.” Title card at bottom: “Meaner than a Junkyard Dog” by Bill Willingham (script), Scott McDaniel (pencils), Andy Owens (inks), Guy Major (colors), Phil Balsman (letters), Michael Wright (editor).

Panel 1: Batman explains: “Then you hired an out-of-work actor to play the part of your uncle. And all the time it took us to hunt him down on his fabricated world travels was actually the time you needed to train him in his role.” Panel 2: Tim, defiant but still downcast: “Yes. Also I needed that time to create a fictional personal history for Uncle Eddie that would pass muster. Social security, tax history, school records, medical records, past employment and residences, and about a thousand other details.” Panel 3: Batman admits: “And you did a thorough job. I doubt anyone but me could have broken it.” Tim mutters: “Yeah. My bad luck for hanging out with the world’s greatest detective.” Panel 4: Close-up of Batman, stern: “You admit your intention was to fool everyone—myself included?” Tim, head down: “Yes.” Panel 5: Batman places a hand on Tim’s shoulder: “Then I have just one thing to say to you, young man.” Tim braces himself in narration: “Here it comes. I’m history.”

Panel 1: Batman surprises Tim with unexpected praise: “I’m so proud of you, I could burst.” Tim’s eyes widen: “What?” Panel 2: Batman calmly: “Why would I [fire you]? You’ve just demonstrated that you have exactly the mindset needed in this job.” Tim, in disbelief: “Really? You’re not going to fire me?” Panel 3: Batman promises: “In fact I’m going to help you plug up some of the holes in your scheme. Then I’m going to fill your Robin’s Nest with every new toy and gadget in our arsenal.” Tim, excited: “My own Batplane?” Batman, half-smiling: “Well, maybe not every gadget.” Panel 4: Alfred, in the Batcave, speaks into a phone: “First, we’d best get ‘Uncle Eddie’ back, and tell him he’s still got a job. Your agent has him spotted at the Blüdhaven bus station, waiting for the 11:15 to Los Angeles.”
