John 20:17. Outside the empty tomb, Christ says to the Magdalene: “Touch me not for I am not yet ascended to my Father.” A moving counterpart to the unbridled rage, sorrow, and fury of the Magdalene in Niccolo dell’Arca’s later “Lamentation” terracotta group in Bologna posted yesterday. Giotto here presents us with a superb surface organization of form, line (Follow the compositional lines – both real and implied), and color. So much so that it takes the viewer beyond the merely apparent, and outside the composition – outside the work – and suggests (gives) to the viewer a brilliant – perhaps first-ever – portrayal of yearning and its feared counterpart, rejection.

The post shows a delicate first-century Roman fresco of a seated woman in a diaphanous gown attentively pouring perfume from a small, fragile, single-handled, glass ampulla (a small pitcher) into a slender, cylindrical, alabastron from which the expensive perfume may be more easily dispensed and applied in smaller amounts. The text in the post states that “The art of fragrance carries with it powers of association that predate human memory and experience. It is the moving likeness of eternity.” Once released, fragrances - essences as ancient as the planet - evolve in their scent through the rise and fall of the notes of their formulations. Their fragrant compositions, therefore, incorporate time itself. Hence, the post text’s conclusion that fragrance is the “moving likeness of eternity.” The conclusion that perfume is “a moving likeness of eternity” was inspired by a passage in Plato’s Timaeus, 7, 37, about the creation of the universe and time.

A quote from the American philosopher, Charles Sanders Peirce: “In contemplating a painting, there is a moment when we lose the consciousness that it is not the thing, the distinction of the real and the copy disappears, and it is for the moment a pure dream.” Art is a compositional bond of both the material and the immaterial, of the real and the semiotic. Here, among other things, Peirce touches upon a phenomenon that most every viewer of a painting has experienced: the toggling between, first, the observation of a subject and, second, the observation of a painting comprised of all the elements that constitute a painting: brush-strokes, color, outline, form, and the like. To illustrate the point, Vermeer’s “Girl with a Pearl Earring” accompanies the post.

Turns out that #ChatGPT borrowed heavily from a novel by Laurent Binet (and probably some reviews) for the anecdote. Binet’s book is called ‘The Seventh Function of Language’. I had never heard of it and ordered it in a bookshop. Promises to be a good read […]

⚠️ Medium Crisis at Numinoise Studio — Preparing GLOWING ERROR STATES There is a certain kind of silence that only appears after too much sound. At Numinoise Studio, that silence has been rare lately. The studio — run by the ever-ambitious TEDDY and the clinically precise CAT — is currently deep in preparations for their debut album: GLOWING ERROR STATES What began as an exploration of hyper-optimized harmonics and emotional compression artifacts has escalated into what the ~NU relations community now carefully refers to as a “temporary challenging situation.” The Overproduction Phase TEDDY, in his white jogging suit and permanently overcommitted enthusiasm, has recently taken “final mastering” to metaphysical levels.
