Sidurgu jolts awake with a rapid series of knocks against his door.
He doesn't know why someone is knocking on his door. Rielle should still be at school, probably busy learning some shite like science or math after finishing lunch a little while ago, judging by the clock on the table beside him. And it's not like anyone comes around to see him these days, especially with Fray gone. But it's the fact that Rielle isn't home that forces him to get out of bed earlier than he'd planned to answer it.
On the other side of the door, he finds the woman who just moved in across the hall. D'alia, he remembers after a still-sleep-lagged second. She runs a hand past the ears atop her head and through her rosy hair, thick waves that spill around her freckled face and shoulders rather than the ponytail she'd worn when he first ran into her earlier in the week, and she smiles up at him in a way that scrunches her green eyes.
"Hey, sorry to bother you—" D'alia starts, then cuts herself off as her smile twists into surprise, blinking at him. "Were you sleeping?"
Sidurgu rubs the scales on the back of his neck, suddenly too aware of the fact he hadn't bothered to throw on more than a pair of sweatpants. "Just a nap."
"Oh."
"I have late shifts. By the time I pick up Rielle from school, and figure out dinner, I don't really have much time before work." And he doesn't have a goddamn clue why he's explaining all this right now. "Did you need something?"
"No, it's okay. I can, uh, manage. Sorry for waking you."
"Listen, D'alia, it's fine." He folds his arms over his chest. "What do you need?"
She hesitates, biting her lower lip. "A car and maybe some company to get groceries. All I have is my Harley, and since I just moved in, I'm kind of low on everything."
