#Silchester #amphitheatre looking through one of the entrances. A stone revetment wall contained the seating banks which were probably fitted with wooden seats. The visible remains belong to the early 3rdC AD but at least 2 predecessors lie underneath. #RomanBritain #Archaeology

#Roman government could not function without communication and provisions. Mansiones or #inns provided a place to stay and freshen up on route. It is believed #Augustus instituted them for officials. A few examples may have been found at #Silchester & #Wanborough.

Last week, I continued my summer tour of our smaller villages with residents' meetings in #Silchester and #MortimerWestEnd.
Thanks to all who attended. We discussed the particular issues in smaller villages, especially broadband, mobile signal and transport.
And how vibrant these villages are 💚

Civitates were more numerous than the colonies. Unlike the coloniae, which were self-contained legal entities created by the #Roman state. The civitates were based around existing #tribal groups. #Silchester is just one of them. #romanbritain #Archaeology (1 of 2) 👇

The Silchester Eagle, on display in Reading Museum. A remarkable find, it’s made of cast bronze and was founded in 1866 in the remains of the basilica at the Roman town of Silchester. It was probably once part of a statue #romaneagle #readingmuseum #rome #ancientrome #silchester
Great walk around #Silchester Roman wall and found the amphitheatre. Bleak weather but very atmospheric, best time of year to visit such places
