#Sinlaku (04W) has strengthened to become the first typhoon of the 2026 Western Pacific typhoon season, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The system has drifted slowly across western Micronesia due to weak steering currents.

#Sinlaku is now the first typhoon of the 2026 season & will continue to strengthen as it tracks NW. Sinlaku is expected to pass near #Guam as a category 4 hurricane equivalent Monday night or Tuesday, local time. The last typhoon to impact Guam was #Bolaven on 10 Oct, 2023.

#Sinlaku (#04W) was upgraded to #typhoon status at 18Z, and it appears to be poised for rapid intensification. Microwave satellite imagery from about 1930Z suggests that an inner core has formed with a very small eye feature. This is bad news for #Guam.

April 13 12:00 UTC model precip and pressure fields for TC #Sinlaku. Dynamical guidance is coming into agreement for an intense typhoon passing over or very near #Guam in <3 days. This could bring worse impacts than Mawar 2023.

Unfortunately the chances are increasing that the Mariana Islands, including #Guam, could see a DIRECT HIT from a Category 4-5 SUPER TYPHOON! A majority of the Google AI Ensemble members are suggesting a Category 5 peak!

#Cyclone #Maila (#30P) has weakened at a spectacular rate, thanks to the combo of easterly shear and southwesterly flow associated with Tropical Storm #Sinlaku in the WPAC. It probably won't last much longer but the torrential rain threat will persist in Papua New Guinea this weekend.

Models are suggesting that the ceiling for #Sinlaku is quite high, with even the HAFS-A suggesting it could be the strongest #typhoon to be near Guam in the month of April. Those in the Mariana Islands NEED to watch this system closely!
