A ★★★★½ review of The Church (1989) How did I sleep so long on Michele Soavi? I hadn't seen any of his movies, although I've had Cemetery Man on my watchlist ever since I joined Letterboxd. The Church is a gothic fever dream that opens with a Teutonic Knight massacre and descends, quite literally, into Hell beneath a cathedral. Conceived initially as Demons 3, Soavi ditched the splatter-punk vibe of Lamberto Bava’s earlier films, except the pondering middle-act where a group of uninteresting wedding guests gets trapped in The Church, just like in Demons. However, the first and third acts are where it truly shines, opting instead

Finally watched Soavi’s The Church (1989) — a demonic fever dream in a Gothic cathedral, lit like stained glass, scored by Goblin & Philip Glass, and yes, there’s a goat demon orgy. Blasphemy never looked so good.
