Why foreshocks of IP shocks and Earth's bow shock look different? In our new paper, we show that they initiate the same way, but observational constraints and global shock geometry get in the way.

How does the @ESA #SolarOrbiter survive its close encounters with the Sun?
Dr. Laura Hayes on #Astrophiz show to reveal the explosive physics of solar flares, CMEs,& the mission to map the Sun’s mysterious polar regions.

☀️ La mission #SolarOrbiter a observé pour la première fois une cascade de reconnexions du champ magnétique dans l’atmosphère solaire. Ces « avalanches magnétiques » pourraient expliquer comment naissent certaines éruptions solaires.

Solar flares aren't sudden! ✨Like snow avalanches, they begin with tiny shifts, unleashing a plasma rain long after the initial burst. ☀️ #SolarOrbiter

A „magnetic avalanche“ on the #Sun! At the end of 2024, ESA’s #SolarOrbiter was lucky to witness a strong solar #flare – and observed the events leading up to this firework with unprecedented precision. Apparently, small restructuring processes in the […]

Amazing data in real time from the @esa.int #SolarOrbiter magnetometer @imperialcollegeldn.bsky.social show that this storm will keep its main Bz > 0 field and its total field will decline, resulting in a West-North-East (WNE) flux rope. At the end there should be an interval Bz < 0 (=more aurora!)

@science.esa.int
It definitely depends though on how much the Bz will stay at < 0, lets see if we get to see a magnetic flux rope at L1. But the speed is fast (if trustable). This storm was directed a bit off the Sun-Earth line towards about 20° north and 20° west of Earth, quite in the direction of #SolarOrbiter.
This finding also contributes to our understanding of space weather, something that’s long been a focus for our missions and is currently being explored by #SOHO, the Proba missions, Swarm, and #SolarOrbiter.

We are waiting for the arrival of both #solarstorms at the @esa.int #SolarOrbiter spacecraft. Its magnetometer could measure their internal magnetic field which can improve our forecasts. It is a bit away from the Sun-Earth line at 10° north / 18° west but at a good distance of 0.83 au from the ☀️

More recently, #SolarOrbiter delivered the world-first views of the Sun’s poles.
A tilted orbit gives Solar Orbiter a unique viewing angle, from where we can better understand the Sun’s magnetic field, the solar cycle, and space weather to ultimately enable us to protect our planet. 4/🔭 #CM25
From there onward, #SolarOrbiter brought us the highest resolution images of the Sun ever, telling us more about its turbulent life:
☀️ imaging giant solar eruptions
☀️ charting the Sun’s effects on the heliosphere
☀️ discovering tiny jets that could power the solar wind

Soon after, we delivered the first #SolarOrbiter data to the scientific community and the wider public.
The data came from the suite of in-situ instruments that measure the conditions surrounding the spacecraft. 3/ 🔭 #CM25
Five months after launch, #SolarOrbiter was delivering its first images of the Sun.
No other images of the Sun had been taken from such a close distance at the time. They revealed omnipresent miniature solar flares, dubbed ‘campfires’, near the surface of the Sun. 2/ 🔭 #CM25
Day 2 at #ESWW2025! @spacedavies.bsky.social rocked the stage with a talk on solar storm forecasts with sub-L1 monitors with @esa.int #SolarOrbiter. I participated in 2 panel discussion, on the role of validation, and the future of space weather modeling at ESA in the next 10-15 years. ☀️💥🤖
