Here's a full-disk view of Sun as it appeared yesterday. We were so excited capturing the filaprom that we let the full disk view go. This really shows off the extraordinary prominence activity that was going on midday, February 16! #sun #astronomy #solarobserving

The SWPC reported Solar activity was at low levels. A C1.5 flare from beyond the west limb was the strongest event of the period. A CME was observed lifting off the NW quadrant in the vicinity of AR4115. 2/2

With the days becoming increasingly hot, our shift to early morning Sun shots was a wise move! Clear skies and quiet winds made for very good seeing as we swapped out cameras from the Canon EOS 6D Mk. 2 to the EOS 5D Mk. 4. #sun #sunspots #solarobserving #astronomy

Little happening on Sol *except* for unassuming active region 4087. Looking like nothin' much, AR4087 has been blasting off regular CMEs all missing Earth... so far. In the next couple of days our planet will be within 4087's strike zone so be ready for action!

Something new is on the horizon! Active Region 4087 is rotating into view after having recently blasted multiple coronal mass ejections (CMEs) into space. Its aim is off from hitting Earth but in coming days, we will be within the sunspot's strike zone.

Using the Askar 103 APO scope and Spectrum Telescope filter, we are likely saying goodbye to active region 4079 and its large sunspot. A few other spots dot Sun's face but hold a bit less interest. May try again tomorrow to catch 4079 on the western limb.

Active Region 4079 will be rolling out of view soon without producing the kind of flares that might be expected from a sunspot of that size. It was an otherwise unremarkable photosphere today.

A full disk image of the sun made on May 7, 2025, showing only three active regions or sunspot groups. Two, to the left of center and one just above center, are fairly unremarkable. AR 4079, however, remains large and in charge, near the sun's western limb which is the right edge of the disk. The solar disk is light gray and the background is solid black.

The day presented unexpected periods of clear sky (between clouds) and decent seeing for our Sun shot. Hoping for better opportunities Friday though our feature of interest may be unavailable.

A tight crop from the full-disk image shows a bit more detail of the large emerging sunspot. Also notable are the sunspot at AR4076 and the rough image texture which is granulation in the solar atmosphere.

The big news is a big sunspot is emerging over Sun's eastern limb. The spot's flare potential is not yet known but the feature is large and may prove to be very active. We shall see. Well, someone will. We'll have clouds.

Sunny skies and mild temperatures today presented us with excellent seeing for our Sun shot. Unfortunately, the rest of the week looks cloudy and damp!

Sun has broken out in spots! A clear, hot day (83°F) produced very good seeing when we captured our white light image this afternoon. We expect cloudy, even stormy, skies over the next few days.

AR 4070 is being watched as the potential source for M-Class flares.

Today was a rare day with views of Sun. We got a nice look at the sunspot in active region 4048, reported to be growing and the source of M-class solar flares. More days of clouds and rain ahead but it was good to see that our local star is still shining! #sunspots #solarobserving #astronomy

Active region 4012 is now capable of producing decent flares as it turns to an Earth-facing position. AR4007 is about to rotate over the limb. We're also seeing a new sunspot just rising over Sun's southeastern limb.

Among the active regions, AR4007 has developed instability and could become a source of powerful X-Class flares. It is approaching Sun's western limb, however, so it remains to be seen it it fires anything in Earth's direction!
