A photo of the fountain out front of Casa Bonita with steam coming from the water and snow flakes falling from the sky
The recent visit on a snowy night at Casa Bonita!

The pepto-bismol pink tower of the entrance to that Colorado icon, Casa Bonita, having been recently restored to all its glory (and even better, up to health code!) by the creators of South Park. The sky is that classic Denver bright blue with out a single cloud, the sun shines bright, and the fountain splashes enticingly — but there are some ice chips floating on the edges of the water, reminding everyone that winter is coming. But there’s no time for worries, because you are about to step into a world of enchantment, aka a modernized-yet-retro take on “Acapulco.”
A diver bends precariously over the edge of the cliff, photographed mere seconds before diving into the waters below. Yes, it is indoors. In a restaurant in a sketchy strip mall in the ‘burbs of Denver. Yes, you can eat dinner and be interrupted every twenty minutes by a two-minute dive show. This is America, anything can happen here! Even a kitschy take on Acapulco cliff diving. Don’t worry, it’s much safer now than it was throughout my childhood, apparently. (Go watch the documentary “Casa Bonita, Mi Amor” to know more.)
The entrance to Black Bart’s cave aka hideout. There are many warning signs telling people to keep out, that there might be a scary monster inside, and it’s totally not Black Bart’s hideout, nope, not at all. There are also a pair of chatty skeletons chained to the wall just outside the entrance as another warning, but they just like to tell each other jokes. Also, spoiler alert, it is Black Bart’s hideout and you can find his treasure behind a door of the safe for Joslin’s the original department store that was sold and turned into Casa Bonita in the 1970’s. What a fun Easter egg for local nerds!
A basket of sopapillas! In the before times, this was the only decent food worth eating at Casa Bonita. Once the South Park guys took over, they improved the food (arguably, one might say, especially if one is a fan of day-glo queso on their cheese enchiladas). But the sooapillas remain! Except they now come with honey already drizzled instead of letting you pour your own honey into these soft, warm, delicious pillows. It’s probably one way to keep things clean and less sticky.
Happy Black Bart Friday! Only real Denver kids will understand. Or anyone who has watched the excellent documentary, “Casa Bonita, Mi Amor.” #sopapillas
