My latest editorial cartoon depicts a scene that plays out thousands of times each legislative session in the hallways of the Hawaiʻi State Capitol—but almost never where the public can see it. A powerful, well-compensated lobbyist stands in the corridor, offering his philosophy of democracy. It is simple, cynical, and brutally honest: money equals influence. Relationships equal access. Access equals outcomes. But the kicker? He insists on anonymity. "It all comes down to relationships," he says in a speech balloon. "You build trust, you go to lunch, you explain the 50-page bill they haven't read—and boom! Democracy does exactly what the client paid for it to do!" The request for anonymity captures everything wrong with the role of money and influence in our state government. Because in a genuine, open democracy, transparency is not a threat to relationships.
