Him and Toriel never formally split, he is in Dryplace to enact his plan to gather souls, with Sans delivering the souls to the Capitol. Not many humans made it past him.

Personality-wise, the AU runs a narrow 90-10 personality swap, picking and choosing to swap certain traits and aspects of the world. Still feeling like their OG counterparts just under different circumstances.
