Research communication in an age of mistrust By communicating that science is a process, and articles aren’t endpoints, we can build understanding and trust in science and those who publish it

Melinda Kenneway on why research integrity is a communication issue, and why broader communication of research is vital when you're dependent on public funding.

Terrific talk by Kristen Ratan on the self-isolation of publishing: we went down a single mode fork (XML, PDF, links to outputs). Everybody else went down another.

Yes, but: are enshittified platforms and the web in a state of managed decline really the model we want to emulate? #SSP2024

One Tech Tip: Want to turn off Meta AI? You can't — but there are some workarounds If you use Facebook, WhatsApp or Instagram. you probably noticed a new character pop up — answering search queries, entering your group chats and eagerly offering tidbits of information in your feeds.

Tech companies are not going to give us a choice.

I sincerely hope scholarly publishing doesn't follow a similar path of FORCED AI adoption.

Writing is hard. Writing IS a way of thinking.

Giving that up to GenAI is foolish. Is giving away part of the human element that I keep hearing panelists say they want to protect.

Maybe we need other disciplines to remember "the medium is the message" like comics does. #SSP2024

Panelists at the #SSP2024 opening plenary on AI suggest that, if/as the effort involved in writing and reviewing manuscripts decreases, then reproducibility of results will be the “proof of work.”

But how will we decide whether what is reproduced matters or put pressure on how it is conceptualized?

You know how I promised I'd be grimacing about AI at this conference?

It's happening.

Something I'm hearing, though not being said explicitly, in Deborah Blum's keynote:

Scholarly publishing is moving too fast, with too much volume, to be as transparent and accurate as we need it to be.

Slowing down isn't a popular take, but I truly believe it's needed. #SSP2024
