The community is only accessible by boat - there is no road connection to the tiny town. Updating to add - Stehekin is often right in the middle of wildfires in the summer, and it was no different over this past summer of 2025. Because of the fires, the area is surrounded by burn scars. Heavy rainfall on burn scars can cause flash flooding, bringing down debris, mud and more. By the images, that is what appears to have happened here because of the excessive rainfall in the mountains. Many people were taking the ferry from #Chelan to #Stehekin and riding the #bus up to #RainbowFalls. We decided instead to walk the 3.5 miles so we could see the remaining historic sites, such as the old school, hand-dug irrigation ditches to the pioneer apple orchard and an 1892 era post office.
There’s already plant growth within the burned areas of the 2024 fire near #Stehekin in #WashingtonState. This still early April 2025 and early spring, so we didn’t find many #wildflower blooming yet, but the near future looks promising.
#hiking through some of the burn effects along the steep shores of #LakeChelan left by the 2024 #PioneerFire near #Stehekin I found the forms that remain fascinating and beautiful. Trails are open but some rough spots where we turned around.
