A surprise on the upper slopes of Suilven: a magpie moth. There were lots of them at about 2,000 feet, where the slope tends ever more vertical. I now know a lot more about butterflies moths and their differences.

October 2016. An early rise, and a slow drive to the base of Stac Pollaidh. Slow because I was on a single track road in the dark and in front of me for a loooooooong way was a badger. Ambling along with no worries in the world. Yes I was in a north of Scotland, animal driven, 4am traffic jam. He wouldn’t even use the passing places, maybe he was a tourist badger. 🦡 Finally, getting to the mountain I started to climb, aware that I had a lot less time to get to the top to catch dawn over Assynt and Coigach. It was 5C, and I was hiking up by moonlight, surrounded by the disconcertingly close roars of red deer stags fully in the rut. By the time I got to this point, I was down to my t shirt, sweating with the effort of carrying a big rucksack of clothing, coffee, sandwiches and camera equipment. The sun was starting to lighten the sky and I decided to stop here on this shoulder where I had a view across to Suilven. Back on with the clothes while I was still warm - jumper, fleece, “big coat, gloves and hat. Staying toasty warm under that lot. “Comfy” rock located to sit on.Tripod set up. Coffee poured. And wait to see where the sun rise rays would hit. They landed rather nicely. Photo taken, sandwiches eaten, some thoughtful mindfulness contemplated from my happy place, and back down the hill as the first hill walkers started to appear out of the car park. I passed them coming down, feeling content and not a little smug. Sometimes you don’t need to get to the summit. Following badgers, being on a hill at night, listening to the belling of the stags, watching the scenes unfold that most people never witness. Those things are enough.
Some memories of taking photos stand out. This came after a night hike up Stac Pollaidh, racing the dawn to the top to photograph Suilven. Full story in the Alt text.
