Supporters tell committee that supported decision‑making law would expand options to guardianship House Bill 26 09 would create a statutory framework for supported decision‑making agreements, allowing adults to name supporters, setting duties and fiduciary limits, and providing third‑party recognition and penalties for misuse; disability advocates and clinicians urged passage as a less‑restrictive alternative to guardianship.

Kansas is on the verge of empowering adults with a groundbreaking Supported Decision Making Agreements Act that could transform guardianship options forever!

Supported decision-making isn’t about taking control—it’s about sharing it. This approach helps people with disabilities stay involved in their own decisions, with guidance instead of restriction.

Poster the University of Galway and Research Ireland logos. The poster has a series of questions with pictures beside each answer. The text reads. Young people who are non-speaking, sometimes speaking or communicate differently and research on the Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Act.
Who can take part? Young people who are non-speaking, sometimes speaking or communicate differently aged from 16 to 35 years and their supporters can take part. They should have made or be getting ready to make a support agreement under the Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Act 2015. What will people taking part have to do? People taking part in this research will have to tell Clíona things like who helps them to make decisions, what role under the new law they picked, what was easy or hard about learning about it or getting it set up. How can I find out more? Contact Clíona at cliona.debhailis@universityofgalway.ie or 0860081153

I’m an adult with autism. I built a team to help me make decisions Supported decision-making or SDM is an alternative to adult guardianship for people with a cognitive or intellectual disability, writes Jonathan Gardner. With SDM, I’m the CEO of my life. Rather than taking decisions away from people like me, SDM allows us to use supporters to help us make and communicate our own decisions.

An #autistic cancer survivor used #SupportedDecisionMaking to maintain #autonomy over his medical treatment and life decisions rather than submitting to restrictive #guardianship. 👏
