There is a lot coming to the surface in this time. A lot that can awaken shock, anger, grief, and helplessness. And just because information is available does not mean it is healthy for us to consume in large amounts. Our nervous system does not clearly distinguish between reading about trauma and witnessing it. It reacts as if it is happening here and now. According to trauma research and knowledge about the nervous system — including work shared by Stephen Porges and Peter Levine — we know that repeated exposure to violence, abuse, and graphic details can bring the body into a constant state of alarm. It happens quietly. Without us noticing. The pulse shifts. The breath becomes shallow. Thoughts grow darker. The body tightens. It is not weakness. It is biology. When we dive deeply into dark and intense material, curiosity can pull us further in than our nervous system can tolerate. And that rarely creates clarity. It creates unrest. To prioritize: To pause. To take a break. To choose not to consume more right now. That is not ignorance. It is self-care ❤️ Your mind is not a crime scene. It is not designed to hold endless amounts of human cruelty. What we give our attention to continues to live within us. And that includes other people’s anger, fear, and disturbed thoughts. In a time like this, protecting your nervous system is an act in itself. Keeping your energy as clear and stable as possible. It does not mean turning your back on the world or being naïve and ignorant. It means standing stronger within it. 👉 And perhaps that is exactly where each of us makes the greatest difference 🌍✨
There is much surfacing right now—shocking, painful, overwhelming.
Your nervous system reacts as if it is happening here and now. Repeated exposure keeps the body in alarm.
Pausing and limiting what you consume is self-care, not ignorance.
