On the far left of the picture, a dirt and rock path curves from the left side toward the center of the picture. Several tall trees, some gray, some brown rise beside the path. The left lower to right upper corners of the photo are covered with broken Old and worn rock with white and dark gray splotches. Parts of the rocks are worn and curved, while other angles of the rock are straight and angular. Happy bright green moss randomly covers flat surfaces on the rocks on the right. Wild flower leaves grow among the dark brown soil at the base of the rocks. A few maple trees, about the same height of the wild flowers, are also trying to grow amongst the rocks.
The picture is taken from a gray rock ledge. A tall tower of stacked rock is in the right lower corner with low vegetation of wild flowers and small plants hiding part of it from sight. A deciduous tree extends higher than the rock in the foreground. A deciduous tree is wind blown in the left corner of the picture. The view falls away beyond the center of the picture with rolling green mountains, which have dark and light green areas from the clouds. Table rock and hawksbill from Linville Gorge can be recognized in the left distance. White clouds are low and flat against a deep blue sky.

The image shows the deep greens of trees, sloping upward on grandfather Mountain across the width of the picture. On the mountain, the S shape of the Linn Cove Viaduct curves around the mountain. Medium grey to white rock is mounded in front of the viewer with green vegetation on either side, and the right corner is anchored with another large piece of rock. Gray clouds are in the upper portion of the picture with one white section slightly offset to the left of center. From this white section a segment of rainbow curves from the cloud to the ground. A fainter rainbow segment curves from the cloud to the ground to the left of the brighter rainbow.

The left side and bottom of the photo image contain rocks at a slight diagonal upwards. Beyond these a row of jagged, Evergreen trees point to the sky. Between two sets of evergreen trees points, a rock emerging from the greenery by itself at the same angle as the rest of the rocks in the picture. And evergreen tree tops the picture and finishes out the left side. Wild blueberry bushes and other small vegetation are mixed on the left side of the picture in the distance. A gentle curve of grandfather Mountain rises center of picture to the right. Gray rock emerges in some spots with steep stone faces that defy vegetation. The top of the mountain is darker with Evergreen trees, while the lower slopes are covered with deciduous trees. An “s” shaped curve of the Linn Cove Viaduct of the Blue Ridge Parkway way can be seen snaking across the mountain. The sky is a deep midday blue with starkly white clouds, small and close to the mountain.

The top rock on the left is the iconic Rough Ridge picture rock viewed from from the Tanawha trail right before the trails meet. Linn Cove Viaduct seen in the distance.
The right lower side of the picture contains a wooden sign which labels Wilson Creek Overlook in white writing at 90 degrees to a wooden sign labeled in all caps Tanawha trail : arrow left Linn Cove 1.2 miles, left arrow Beacon Heights 2.7 miles, Right arrow Rough Ridge 1.4 miles, Right arrow Price Park 10.3 miles. Moderate sized rocks (2-3 feet across) intermix with fallen tree branches and thick twisted roots to form a trail that curves around the sign. Long thin green forest grass and short baby trees and vegetation fill the space before a tall tree distant left with the white feather and circle trail marker for the Tanawha trail. A large wide gray stone is in front of this thicker trees. Younger thinner trees are in the distance with a large rhododendron to the right if the trail in the distance. Dappled filtered light through the trees provides variation in color intensity.

The bottom of the picture shows moderate and large sized pieces of rock angled upward. Years of dirt have settled between the rocks. About the middle of the picture the rocks become very angular and sheets of layered rock positioned nearly horizontally. The sheets of layered rock are stacked on top of one another in places with 90° corners near the top. Some of the corners are broken, but the sheets of rock are stacked to form a very tall column. The effect at the top of the rock is as if there are thick pieces of paper jumbled in a stack, not neat and straightened . The rock extends outward forming a shaded area. Beside the rock column on either side are moderate sized trees with deciduous green leaves. The top of the rock formation is visually blocked by some of the deciduous leaves. Light filters through the picture from a source of the sun shining from the left side.

Note to self: An easier way to visit this rock formation in the future would be to hike Rough Ridge and then turn right onto the Tanawha trail, and walk 10 minutes. Not hike from the Linn Cove parking lot.
The bark of a tree trunk is seen emerging from the ground center of picture to top right corner. The bark has gray liking highlights and bright, green moss mainly at the bottom, but in patches along the bark. A very narrow trail of Brown bark and leaves curves from bottom center of the picture Leftwards and then to top center. A gray rock is in the left corner with darker patches of moss as it is not being highlighted with light coming through the trees. Several smaller rocks with moss extend along the pathway. Top left corner are three outward, fanning fronds of fern.

Medium sized stones are stacked atop a deep layer of gray stone. The deep layer of stone drops off sharply to the right among rhododendron bushes. Dirt and clumps of grass are mixed in . Fern and small bushes extend among the cracks in the stone. The left side of the picture is a large towering stone extending upward higher than the photograph and angled outward as it goes upwards. Cracks in that large rock extend horizontally and show perspective towards the center of the picture. one thin deciduous tree makes a diagonal line along the edge of the large rock eventually, extending beyond it towards the center top of the picture. Four additional thin trunked deciduous trees can be seen at the far side of the trail, with three extending vertically and another angled upward. Green deciduous leaves fill the background of the picture.

Gray cement, the width of two lines of traffic curves overhead. The concrete spans the top of the picture, curving toward the right and then turning left. A supporting pillar can be seen center of picture mainly hidden by deciduous trees growing under the concrete span. The concrete does not touch the mountain to the left. The gray rock of the mountain can be seen to the left of the concrete span with deciduous vegetation growing on it. A low rock is in the front left foreground of the picture.
