Attempting to craft my first few voices for the DX7s
Not terribly impressive, but hey, umm, I'm sure I will figure this all out

So yeah, I went out and bought a DX-7s I absolutely, and i can not stress this enough, cannot afford.
Seriously, at this point someone should tase me for my own safety whenever I type the word REVERB

A steel brick with knobs on that can survive everything except a direct nuclear strike.

I also love the cheesy glitchy digital scatter effect built in. Thus effect is definitely less is more, and I practiced triggering and stopping it in subseconds
#roland #tr8 #technodungeon
The TR8 was the first instrument to feature Roland's Analogue Circuit Behaviour modelling. Having used this drum machine for a decade, I have to say ACB nails it, giving a seemingly analog feel, the difference is undetectable to me anyway.
#tr8 #technodungeon
You get stereo outputs and only 2 assignable outputs, so no individual outs. The two further audio connections are inputs, configured as stereo or summed mono. MIDI is where it should be, and even though there's no MIDI Thru, the output can serve as a 'soft thru' if necessary
#tr8 #technodungeon
The "Close Encounters of the Synth Kind" front panel is always live, and delivers the "timeless but dated" sounds of the 909, 808, 707, and 606
It is easy to swap instruments or entire kits regularly during playback. The TR8 offers an eternally shifting scratchpad.
#tr8 #technodungeon
IF you put your samples very carefully in the directory which will give them access to the right effect
IF you carefully add the samples without crashing and breaking the app
IF you don't experience a random instrument crash
THEN you could do a whole set with just the D1
#technodungeon #Donner
BUT, I still LIKE this pos
I've loaded up drum kits from Roland, Korg, Simmons, Korg, Casio, and it all sounds great. Doing complex sequencing of lofi Casio drum samples is really fun, the sounds are better than they should be.
Everything sounds great on this
#technodungeon #Donner #donnerd1 #d1
The pads are also, a bit weird. On finger drumming, they work. But if you are inputting a sequence on those same pads, suddenly they aren't as responsive and you need to hit the pads at weird angles, and each pad wants to be hit at a different spot or angle
#technodungeon #Donner #donnerd1 #d1
And you don't have individual outs, so you can't really isolate each time sound to process it externally either
AND the instrument is buggy, I've had the unit crash because I adjusted decay on the bass drum, crash because I stopped playing a sequence, etc
#technodungeon #Donner #donnerd1 #d1
Well there is a dedicated Bass Drum button, Snare Drum, Tom, etc
AND you only have access to certain effects for certain drums - only the bass drum button has access to Distortion, for example.
So crafting and perfecting each Drum sound is extremely limited
#technodungeon #Donner #donnerd1 #d1
But when I used up 2% of that storage, I discovered the app just couldn't handle the numbers of samples I added. For a week I could not add new or delete old samples. Eventually it let me add new samples, bit not delete old ones
And the way you add samples?
#technodungeon #Donner #donnerd1 #d1
The Donner D1 promotes itself as an essential drum machine which is great fir beginners and pros alike
It allows you to load in samples, and the app automatically converts files into a valid format
The unit boasts 4 gigs of storage, which should be ample...
#technodungeon #Donner #donnerd1 #d1
Today in the Techno Dungeon, allow me to explain my love/hate relationship with a drum machine I could not possibly recommend
The Donner D1
A fun, but disappointing grey box with a color coded lightshow

David Bowie played the Stylophone on his 1969 hit "Space Oddity", on his 2002 track "Slip Away," and on "Heathen (The Rays)"
Kraftwerk's 1981 "Pocket Calculator" features the Stylophone and ends with a Stylophone solo

Several variants of the Stylophone were commercially available from 1968 to 1975.
The standard Stylophone was relaunched in 2007, but bass, treble and professional versions were not released.

Stylophones have a metal keyboard made of a printed circuit board. Each note on the keyboard is connected to a voltage-controlled oscillator via a different-value resistor, and touching the stylus to the keyboard closes a circuit

Anyway its a pretty good value (approx 120 universal credits) for an analog drum machine.
It has speakers built-in, like in my cheesy fast demo, BUT really you need to hook this up to an amp for it to come to life

You can transpose the base pitch upwards by as much as 4 octaves. So the Volca Kick is not limited to kicks. It doesn’t reach the plinky heights of claves, but can turn out rimshots, congas and zips, blips and pips

The DX-27 is awesome for techno, house, jungle, and acid; it can provide basslines that go beyond gritty, and venture into gristle!
However programming your own sounds requires a huge learning curve
#Synthwave #dx27 #fmsynth #synth #oldschool #80s #Synthpop #Electro #technodungeon #1980s #dx100
People often complain that this 4 operator, 6 algorithm synth is not as powerful or as flexible as the legendary DX-7. However the DX-7 easily commands prices 3 times higher than the DX-27

The DX-27 is the full sized keys variant of the dx100, notable for its truly epic and desirable bass sounds, and heralded as the originator of the Miami Electro Bass sound

I am absolutely thrilled! My DX-27 arrived with two dead keys and a very dodgy power connector. But that was fixed by a local repair guy faster than I could blink! Thank you Cowley Road Studios!
