Reading #TheAICon by #EmilyBender and #AlexHanna and I’m really enjoying their rhetorical technique of using the more accurate phrase “synthetic text extruding machines” to refer to #LLMs rather than loaded expression “AI.”

This came up during today’s book club meeting on The AI Con. Some faculty have been “encouraged” to include AI in their annual goals reports. So what will happen to those who refuse to bend to admin pressure? I think unions need to be proactive rather than reactive on this question. #theaicon

It's a little easier to understand the hype, hysteria and hubris of #TheAICon if you think about it within the longer context of The Enlightenment's fascination with "engineering the soul" and in light of capitalism's complete appropriation of science and technology to achieve its primary end.

I wonder how much of this might be related to David Graeber's theory about bullshit jobs. 🤔
For example, I believe that many of the professional coders now being fired because of "AI" will be hired back later as "prompt engineers," lower-payed bullshit jobs.
