“You were wondering why we were so sure they would try to kill you…”

Sanji could listen while fighting. He flooded the leopard with fire and struck harder. The smell of burnt hair and flesh filled the air. Lucci blocked everything.

“It’s because not even a monster could ever love a failure like you.”

Under other circumstances, at other times, Sanji would have collapsed at the words. However, as the pain pierced his chest, a howl of rage burst from the samurai’s. His beastly aura filled the space: the devil’s knight had heard the hurtful remark, and his protective instincts compelled him to react, as he had always reacted to the slightest vibration of his prince’s heart since they had met.

He parried an attack from the armor, katanas clanging against a heavy sword. His biceps and jaw tensed as he shot Lucci a contemptuous glance. Then he fixed his gaze on Sanji, on the pain threatening this beautiful burning soul, and a purr replaced the tiger’s growl as he murmured softly:

“Yet I am but a man.”

Then the door opened, and the witch appeared, immense, grim-looking, with dry hair and a pointed nose. She wasn’t frighteningly ugly, no, she was just different, but her annoyance seemed to carve her features and made her look repulsive.

“What do you want from me?” she asked in a shrill voice.

Several members of the group recoiled in terror.

“Aaaah, a witch!” cried Usopp.

“I am a witch, you lout!” Nami raged from behind Jinbe.

“Aaaah, a witch!” repeated Usopp, staring at Nami, who threw her staff at his face.

“But this one’s real!” exclaimed Chopper.

“Call me a fake witch again!” yelled Nami, who had nothing left to throw and was still clinging to Jinbe.

“She might actually cook us up in a stew,” added Robin, fascinated by the idea.

Franky took up an attack stance, ready to defend what remained of his flesh, while Jinbe backed away—not because he was afraid, but because he took his bodyguard role as seriously as Zoro himself, albeit with a little less zeal.

“Oh! She looks like a giant branch!” laughed Luffy, craning his neck to look at the witch’s face, which was marred by a nasty scar.

Zoro was about to add his own comment when Sanji finally managed to intervene.

“Morbleu, you really have no manners… What am I going to do with you?”

He nudged Franky with his elbow, dragging the samurai along behind him with an air of weariness. Even the witch recoiled when she saw him approaching, which informed the devil of her human nature.

The steps of the front porch obstructed him, so he had to forgo kneeling. Instead, he offered the woman a friendly smile and performed a prince-like bow, his arm waving in a complex flourish.

« Disappear! » she shouted again, and Sanji was about to curl up into a ball and let her hit him—it wouldn’t have been the first time, he was used to it.

He wouldn’t have minded disappearing if it was what was required of him. If it was how he could be useful, repaying the people who loved him for the sacrifices they had made on his behalf. If it could have appeased the anger of this woman whom he would never have even thought of harming, yes, he would have disappeared.

Something that had been cracked for a long time in his soul broke almost completely. The world shrank around him, dotted with blurred images and shades of blue-grey like loneliness. Sanji raised his hands to hide his face, to hide as much as he could, although it was impossible given his scarlet body, his horns and goat legs, his overly imposing magical aura. Disappear. How could one disappear when the monster took up so much space? How could one disappear when they burned so brightly?

Then there was movement around him. Two figures, at first. A red costume in which flowed, supple and mischievous, a lutin with strange powers. A long green haori accompanied by three drawn katanas, the metal of their blades reflecting the fury of a samurai ready to do anything to protect his peers. Someone took his arm; fur settled against his elbow. A large hand pushed him aside as a naked figure formed a barrier between him and the angry innkeeper.

Sanji let himself be led away. He could barely hear Nami yelling at the innkeeper, Zoro threatening her coldly, and Luffy giving orders.

They surrounded their cook and shielded him from all the shouting and complaints until they were out of the village. They distanced themselves as much as they could, reaching the edge of the woods they planned to enter the next day. There, Chopper announced a state of shock, and a new crackling sound echoed in Sanji’s buzzing ears.

They set up camp on a stable area of the plateau, where the snow seemed less thick and the ground less uncomfortable. Sanji spread his wings as wide as he could, fought against the wind to position them in an arc around his friends, and dug the tips of their fingers into the rock. When he stamped his heel on the ground, fire enveloped them, violent and wild, until his fist closed and not a trace of water vapor remained under their feet.

They huddled inside, pressed close together in this space that Sanji found both too big and too small, as if he wanted to bring all these people closer to his heart, but his heart would burst if he did.

They shared a meal of dried meat, bread, and compotes Sanji heated up in no time, then settled down quietly for the night. Most were already asleep when Zoro commented in his usual tone:

“You’re peeling.”

“What… are you?” he asked in a high-pitched voice, his large, moist eyes melting away what little mistrust still lingered in the devil’s heart.

Sangdieu, he’s even more adorable than I imagined, thought Sanji, who had been well informed on the subject by his pantry raider.

“He’s the devil,” Luffy assured, picking his nose. “He’s amazing, right?!”

“He’s a satyr,” Zoro added, scratching his ear where he had just been burned.

“Are you done ruining all my efforts?!” Sanji snapped, levitating for a moment to give each of them a kick with his hooves.

“You’re peeling again.”

The memory of their previous confrontation about his skin made his cheeks burn. The samurai had the physiognomy of a war god, a savage expression to be damned for—although that was probably already done in his case—and nothing could have prepared Sanji for what this man’s large hands would to do on his skin. Under his skin. As if he were stripping him bare at the source, as if he could see through the layers the fiery soul that weariness and isolation were suffocating, and with those tiger claws, he had carved into the hollow of his body: “I will kill you if you dare let that flame die.”

“You… You got lost into marrying me?!”

The samurai grimaced and retorted:

“I told you these mountains were a maze. You should be impressed my survival instinct is strong enough to have found your crappy castle in the middle of all this snow!”

“Your survival instinct led you straight into the devil’s kitchen! You know, the one they say eats people!”

“Heh. I made it out, didn’t I?”

The warrior’s expression was so haughty Sanji immediately kicked him. The swords responded, but the red man hesitated to counter the one that had freed him from his chains. Although the flame of resentment still burned brightly and indomitably in his fierce soul, the samurai saw the glimmer of gratitude that now inhabited it. He sheathed Enma, shaking his head, and growled:

“I see, my prince. Your debt puts you at a disadvantage. In that case, I will also keep one hand behind my back.”

The warrior’s confidence, his wild aura that responded all too well to his own and read him like an open book, further enraged the devil, who kicked again. Zoro parried. They smiled at each other.

“What a noble heart, valiant knight. Do you think me so weak as to need your pity?”

A loud burst of laughter, light and playful, interrupted them both.

“Ah, I told you the two of you would get along!”

“What was it this time…?” asked the samurai, his vision clouded with black spots.

“It was my method for melting the alliance. But if it reverberated on you like this, that means…”

“Your method, since they cast that spell, is to burn your arm off?” interrupted Zoro.

The dark spots faded as the information reached him. The prince’s soft, though anxious voice calmed the trembling of their limbs.

Sanji froze, but replied with a disillusioned sigh:

“Yes, why?”

Zoro sat up. His head was spinning, but he wanted to look the devil in the face, to check that the flame in his eye was still burning as brightly as ever, that it hadn’t disappeared along with what he already knew to be a sacrifice.

“And does it do that to you every time?”

Samurai rarely acknowledged their wounds and pain. Their ideal was to transcend these elements that tied them to the earthly world, to the vacuity of this plane on which they had only one destiny: to live and die nobly in order to be better reincarnated.

However, they were taught to feel empathy for their peers, and Zoro was one of those enlightened souls whose resilience rivaled only their compassion.

“Well, yes… It’s a small price to pay to free someone from… from me.”

As Zoro was preparing to question Sanji about the divorce, a noise coming from the pantry startled them. The samurai immediately stood up straight, swords drawn, but the devil shook his head. He slipped a stick of licorice between his lips and laughed:

“Well! Here’s an alert warrior! If I needed a knight, I’d dub you, moss ball.”

The irony dripped from every syllable, syrupy as the voice of the real devil must have been, and Zoro couldn’t resist pointing his katana at the red man’s throat.

“Call me that one more time, and believe me, you will quickly cease to be immortal, Lord Spiral.”

The prince burst out laughing, growled, and turned toward him. A kick of his hoof on the ground set him ablaze.

“You would kill your beloved spouse in cold blood?” he sulked, gnashing his teeth.

Zoro grimaced at the word. The red man had spoken with a hint of resignation, as if the question were rhetorical because he already knew the answer. The samurai sometimes struggled to process his thoughts, but he was beginning to learn the steps of this dance he had started with the devil.

“This isn’t the first time it’s happened to you.”

Sanji shook his head, his expression still vindictive, but Zoro saw the flame waver in his eye. He was about to reply when a new noise interrupted their game. The devil frowned, let his fire subside, and headed for the pantry.

“You little rat! If I catch you trying to eat my wax loafs again, I’m burning you with it!”

“I did everything I could to chase him away, and this bloody imbecile took it as a challenge!” he belched, kicking his other foot into the air to aim for Zoro’s temple.

The samurai had just enough time to draw his second sword and counter the assault. The wings flapped behind the red man, the two hooves moved away. The warrior decided to attack before considering the meaning behind the words his opponent was spitting out. Far away was the shy, motionless host, hidden in his palanquin. The wild and aggressive aura he had sensed rolling in was everywhere now, opposing his own.

“And he’s still going!” exclaimed its bearer, raising his curled eyebrow.

Zoro gave him his best killer smile and slipped his third sword between his teeth. The devil gave him one last condescending look, smoked even harder through the cracks in his blood-red skin, then exhaled with an air of resignation. In his furious eye, Zoro recognized the flame of a man who loves fighting too much to pass up the opportunity.

“You want to play that game, stranger? Fine. Let’s play.”

Then, as if responding to the three swords threatening him with their cold, hungry gleam, the devil with a human soul took a step back. Under Zoro’s delighted gaze, the moment the hoof touched the ground, the soul and the devil burst into flames.

Although the stranger ate and drank like ten men, he refused all advances, regardless of gender. Several things seemed out of place to him. First, the prince had his food served through the curtains of his palanquin, and all those who slipped their hands inside withdrew them as if the devil were about to grab them by the wrists and drag them into his hell. Second, although the music, food, and beverage were of excellent quality, none of the attendees seemed to be in a genuinely festive mood. The prince himself exuded his wild aura, somber now, and directed it insistently toward his person. The dancers, musicians, and courtiers masked the tension in their muscles behind their inebriation, but Zoro wasn’t fooled. Finally, they only made an exception when clinging to him in an attempt to win him over, as if his presence could protect them from some demonic threat.
The samurai, massive and of noble bearing, was accustomed to such behavior. However, he sensed something else in the hurried gestures and frayed nerves of this unrestrained revelry. Something that neither venison nor alcohol could completely erase from the minds of ordinary men: every single one of them was consumed by fear.
