The new 4CD release of William Basinski’s The Disintegration Loops. So-called because they are recordings of loops of old tape gradually shedding their oxide and slowly turning silent. The effect is - to me at least - rather moving. You can almost hear the music struggling against the odds to stay alive. The suspicious-looking old person seen here is me, showing off my new copy in the industrial-chic stairwell leading up to (or down from, in this case) Seismic Records, from whom I have just bought it. If you are ever in Leamington Spa, I urge you to visit them.
I first heard #TheDisintegrationLoops a decade ago and its sense of decay and death as the music literally crumbled away made a deep impression. Today I bought the new box, though now nearly 70 I’m apprehensive of the emotions it will stir. At least it made a sale for the excellent #SeismicRecords.
