This is #TheDoubleTax.

Janai Norman is the first news anchor to EVER give me a TV spot. It was so clear from the first time we spoke that she is committed to highlighting important stories and bringing fresh perspectives to the air. Why that wouldn't be valued, especially now, blows my mind.

I'm very excited to share that I'll be following the likes of @jamellebouie.net by speaking at Williams College on April 22 as part of their 2026 Public Affairs Forum!

In conversation with @sarahjacobson.bsky.social, we'll discuss the (not-so) hidden truth about work and #TheDoubleTax. 😭🥹

Why do Black women continue to face the brunt of job losses and exits?

My book #TheDoubleTax and this piece in TIME Magazine with @mariannecooper.bsky.social dig into the likely reasons.

Why are Black women continuing to bear the brunt of unemployment? Three words: #TheDoubleTax.

What Dr. Valerie Wilson has shown is that the group experiencing joblessness is COLLEGE-EDUCATED Black women. Let that sink in. #jobsreport #jobsday

One major factor driving rising Black unemployment is rising Black women's unemployment.

If Black women already face barriers in the workplace because of racism and sexism #TheDoubleTax, then policy choices that make these conditions worse will lead to worse outcomes for Black women. 🤷🏿‍♀️

I cannot get over the fact that Black COLLEGE EDUCATED women were hit hardest by the federal job losses.

One thing I learned while writing #TheDoubleTax is that the labor market undervalues Black women off rip. It is WILD.

Black women suffered large employment losses in 2025—particularly among college graduates and public-sector workers The 2025 labor market can best be characterized as faltering. The national unemployment rate climbed to its highest point in four years, job growth slowed dramatically, and federal employment fell by ...

In Dr. Valerie Wilson, we trust.

TLDR: The job losses among Black women in 2025 were mostly driven by federal layoffs and buyouts. While there were gains in some private industries, Black women saw net job losses in 6 out of the 12 MAJOR private sector industries.

lol now lets do the math: If you make less because of different barriers in the job market and at work, childcare will be a larger share of your income.

This is the reality of Black moms. This is #TheDoubleTax.

THE DOUBLE TAX COVER ON PENGUIN RANDOM HOUSE WEBSITE

LA TIMES BEST SCIENCE BOOK OF 2025

Why is it so expensive to be a woman in America? From a rising star in economics comes the first comprehensive look at the costs women face and why the bill runs especially high for women of color—with a foreword by Chelsea Clinton.

The “pink tax” has gained widespread recognition in recent years, but what happens when you look at the costs that define a woman’s entire life, especially across racial lines?

In The Double Tax, Harvard researcher Anna Gifty Opoku-Agyeman summarizes the disparities that women face as they navigate life’s biggest moments. Not only do the numbers reveal that women incur higher costs than men, but also that Black and white women lead vastly different lives, marked by dramatic gaps in job opportunities, salaries, housing costs, childcare access, and generational wealth. She coins this gap as the “double tax,” the compounded cost of racism and sexism.

Through rigorous research and interviews with women across the country, Opoku-Agyeman calculates the extra money, time, and effort that women are expected and forced to pay at every stage of their life.

While the evidence may be discouraging, The Double Tax offers actionable solutions for how everyday people, local communities, and global leaders alike can help relieve women of these costs for good. Only by understanding where the gaps are and where the double tax arises can we begin to even the playing field for all.
