Fae’s vtuber model next to the cover of the high desert by James spooner
This was SUCH a cool look into facets of Punk that I wasn’t super familiar with. I love the focus on intersectionality within progressive movements that are absolutely integral to making change in our communities. This story was honest and vulnerable, full of teen angst and healing, and fun to read! There’s something very comforting to me about seeing other people try to navigate the trappings/expectations of their small town. The only like VERY minimal thing that through me off was some of the panel placement, but that’s an issue I have with graphic novels in general usually. 4/5
Fae’s vtuber model next to the cover of trans and nonbinary comics: the OUT side
I think this is a super cute collection of stories from an incredible variety of artists! It’s a relatively quick read with some great art. I have a mild critique of the collection in general that I’ve struggled with since reading it. A lot of the comics, understandably, deal with gender/body dysphoria. And while I take some reassurance in knowing that other people have struggled with that issue it kind of makes me feel like that’s the *only* kind of trans narrative available. I don’t think it’s intentional at all, and not all trans & nonbinary people experience dysphoria, but at times it felt a little disheartening. I wish the publishers had found a way to include *more* stories about queer joy outside of that specific topic. I think these stories are told in a beautiful, honest way and I think including more examples of the various ways trans & nonbinary people experience joy and euphoria and love would go equally as far in their impact. 3/5
I’m a big big fan of #graphicnovel biographies. Something about the combination of the art form based on personal events makes it connect in a really wonderful way #bookreview #thehighdesert #comics #punk #lgbtqia #nonbinary
