KARL MARX ON "THE JEWISH QUESTION" In his 1844 essay "On the Jewish Question," Marx argued that the emancipation of Jews would come only with the emancipation of society from capitalism. He famously (and controversially) secularized and stereotyped Jewish identity, equating it with the "huckstering" spirit of commerce. For Marx, the solution was universal proletarian revolution. Jewish particularity would dissolve as all class distinctions and national identities were swept away in a new, borderless, communist society. Assimilation was the implicit goal. "

THEODORE HERTZ ON "THE JEWISH QUESTION" Herzl arrived at his solution after witnessing the Dreyfus Affair and rampant antisemitism in Vienna. He concluded that assimilation was a failure and that antisemitism was an incurable pathology in European society. His solution was the exact opposite of Marx's: particularist nationalist revival. Instead of dissolving Jewish identity, he sought to strengthen it by giving it a political expression in a state of its own. The goal was sovereignty, not assimilation. 口口口 NYCREATIONS

Faksimile des Typoskripts. Der relevante Text lautet: »H.: "Ich habe die Judenfrage gelöst". Wenige Wochen darauf schickt er mir sein kleines Buch über den Judenstaat. Ich äussere im ersten Gespräch darüber lebhafte Bedenken. Seine erste Frage: „Kommen Sie mit?" Ich äussere meine Zweifel, dass er selbst nach Palästina gehen werde. Er im Lauf der Diskussion: "Man wird Ihre Stücke in Palästina besser spielen als am "Burgtheater" Ich:„Sie glauben hoffentlich nicht, dass ich meine Stellung zum Judenproblem davon abhängig mache. Aber in welcher Sprache wird man meine Stücke dort spielen?" Er: "In allen Kultursprachen." Er dachte damals keineswegs noch ernstlich an einen Staat mit hebräischer Sprache,sondern als eine Art Föderalismus nach österreichischem Muster. «
